Flight 1 - KRUG (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - GRAND CRU WHITE BURG (3 Notes)

  • 1989 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Golden color. Nose is clearly showing oxidation with honeyed mature orchard fruits. It does have that signature mint note, which is interesting. Palate is dense but rather flat. A bottle that feels over the hill.

  • 2005 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

A wow nose of big rich spice-filled orchard fruit and florals. Excellent concentration of orchard and citrus fruit. Love the density that is still so lively and juicy.

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Montrachet

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Reserved aromatics and showing way too advanced on the palate. More honey and toffee notes than you'd like and texturally flat.

Flight 3 - SAUZET MONTRACHET (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

06/07/08 vertical. From 750, the other two were magnums. Medium gold in color and showing some modest oxidation on the nose, which was especially notable relative to the youthfully bright 07 and 08. The palate has good richness and concentration but is missing the extra gear that both the 07 and 08 showed.

  • 2007 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

06/07/08 vertical. From magnum. Pale gold color. Gorgeous, full bright aromatics that have a laser focus with layers of orchard fruit and mineral. I found this richer/riper than the 08, which I ever so slightly preferred. Still well balanced with plenty of tension.

  • 2008 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

06/07/08 vertical. From magnum. My wine of the flight and just edging out the 07. Pale gold. A wow nose that is rich, round and layered. The palate is so richly concentrated with incredible intensity. Incredibly bright, long finish of sweet orchard fruit and mineral.

Flight 4 - COCHE CORTON CHARLIE (2 Notes)

  • 2000 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Side-by-side with the '03. Towering nose that is so stuffed yet generous and delineated. The palate is similarly loaded with concentrated flinty fruit. At once chewy yet still graceful with crazy length. All that it's cracked up to be.

  • 2003 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Side-by-side with the '00. Surprisingly, I found this to be just a notch or to behind the '00. No signs of over-ripe fruit or heat. Rather, this is impeccably balanced. Kept improving in the glass. And an exotic spice note, that I really liked, became more prominent with time. Seems to have plenty of acid to keep aging. Wonderful.

Flight 5 - LEROY VOUGEOT (2 Notes)

  • 1997 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Side-by-side with '01. Ripe nose of red cherry and baking spices. Tasty if a bit muddled, especially next to the bright and delineated 2001.

  • 2001 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Side by side with the 97. Sexy, exotic nose of red cherry and baking spices. Classic Leroy. Wow palate with so much suave, rich red cherry fruit. Energetic and long. Delicious.

Flight 6 - OLD DRC (WITH SOME FAKES) (3 Notes)

Flight 7 - LA TACHE (3 Notes)

Flight 8 - OLDER LEROY (3 Notes)

  • 1964 Maison Leroy Grands-Echezeaux 100 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Side-by-side with the '66. Ethereal, sensational aromatics -- with an layered array of dried red and black cherry, 5-spice, black tea and earth. Insanely lithe with still fresh fruit and acids. Complexity for days. Seamlessly integrated and unending. Perfection.

  • 1966 Maison Leroy Grands-Echezeaux 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Side-by-side with the '64, which believe it or not was better. This had more generosity and intensity of fruit and spice. You could almost call it slutty, for a 52 year old anyway. Intense red and black cherry, 5-spice with some earth/mushroom lurking beneath. Terrific concentration to the round and lush fruit. Spice-filled finish. Wow.

  • 1982 Maison Leroy Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru

A fine wine, but not special by any means. The nose is initially bashful but opens to show mature cherry with earth tones. Lighter bodied and quite elegant. Fresh, just a bit simple.
