Introduction

The theme for our group's quarterly tasting was pre-200 vintage champagne - perfectly befitting the warm summer weather. A smaller gathering today with only 14 bottles, but one of my favorite themes. Surprisingly we ended up having two sets of duplicates and not a single DP in the bunch. Two producers that were new to me were some of my favorite wines in the line up - Bruno Paillard and Champagne Corbon. Always a great time catching up with friends and drinking great wine! Thanks as always to our hosts MC2 wines for the great hospitality.

Flight 1 (14 Notes)

  • 1998 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut

    France, Champagne

1/14 wines tasted double blind. Nose has some light toast. Tastes of red apple, yeast, bread dough, some notes of sweetness from the dosage on the finish. Nice. 7 pennies voted by the group.

  • 1998 Corbon Champagne Grand Cru Grand Millésime

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

2/14 wines tasted double blind. First time with this producer and one of my top 4 wines in the line up today. The aromatics are minimal. On the palate the mousse is mild/fine, great balance of acidity and fruit, with some bread dough and minerals on finish. Nicely pulled together and drinking very well. 8 pennies voted by the group and 1 penny voted by me.

  • 1993 Deutz Champagne Amour de Deutz Blanc de Blancs Flawed

    France, Champagne

3/14 wines tased double blind. This same wine/vintage was in the tasting line up twice at spots 3 and 14 - I think this bottle may have been off. The nose on this was a bit off-putting to me, with a lactic goat cheese smell. On the palate, there were minimal bubbles and the wine was very oxidized and over the hill. I suspect poor storage. 0 pennies voted by the group.

  • 1996 Deutz Champagne Cuvée William Deutz Rosé

    France, Champagne

4/14 wines tasted double blind. The only rosè in the line-up and so pale that it was hard to even detect this was a rosè. Color is a very pale apricot. The mousse is quiet and the acidity is quite bright - well balanced with notes of honey and toasted nuts. Enjoyable. 2 pennies voted by the group.

  • 1988 André Beaufort Champagne Brut Millésimé

    France, Champagne

5/14 wines tasted double blind. Color is pale straw. The wine tastes clean and linear - good acidity but minimal complexity - not as distinctive a profile in the line up today for me. 6 pennies voted by the group.

  • 1996 de Venoge Champagne Brut Louis XV

    France, Champagne

6/14 wines tasted double blind. Well clearly the most distinctive bottle shape - conjures up images from I Dream of Jeannie! First time trying this producer's champagne. This was easy to drink with good acidity, less of a toasty style - while fine to sip on this did not stand out for me today. 1 penny voted.

  • 1999 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut

    France, Champagne

7/14 wines tasted double blind. The nose here had that lovely rising bread dough aroma. On the palate this stood out as having a more layered style with lemony citrus, bread dough, yeast, honey, toasted nuts and minerals on the finish. My favorite today. 11 pennies voted by the group - 2 pennies voted by me.

  • 1996 Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

8/14 wines tasted double blind. This bottle was showing clear signs of premature oxidation - from the aromatics to the flavors - just like a glass of sherry. I like an oxidative style but this was not that - a shame as I like this producer quite a bit. Group voted 1 penny.

  • 1996 Bruno Paillard Champagne Brut Millésimé

    France, Champagne

9/14 wines tasted double blind. A new producer for me and based on this experience - clearly one to seek out. One of my top 4 in today's line up. Pretty nose of citrus and toast. On the palate this was toasty, yeast and marzipan with lively citrus - so balanced and layered. Yummy! 5 pennies voted by the group - 1 penny voted by me.

  • 1994 Corbon Chardonnay Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut Avize

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

10/14 wines tasted double blind. This has a toasty nose. Very balanced on the palate with refreshing brightness and some grounding toasty, yeasty notes. Long finish - probably just outside my top 4. 6 pennies voted by the group.

  • 1995 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Blanc des Millénaires

    France, Champagne

11/14 wines tasted double blind. We brought this bottle after really enjoying the wine at our last champagne tasting in 2017. Did not crack my top 5 today - but still really enjoyed it. Lots of buttered brioche on the nose. Very toasty and bread on the palate a richer styled champagne with suprisingly very lively bubbles. 5 pennies voted by the group.

  • 1998 Corbon Champagne Grand Cru Grand Millésime

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

12/14 wines tasted double blind. A double of wine #2 which was one of my favorites. This bottle was not as distinctive for me - seemed much younger with less complexity. My notes indicate that it was young & bright. Group voted 6 pennies.

  • 1990 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill

    France, Champagne

13/14 wines tasted double blind. This had a very toasty nose. The palate was displaying quite a bit of toast and vanilla, but perhaps was lacking a bit more brightness to provide some more lift. 2 pennies voted by the group.

  • 1993 Deutz Champagne Amour de Deutz Blanc de Blancs

    France, Champagne

14/14 wines tasted double blind. This was a dupe in the line up, but the bottle was showing significantly differently. Actually one of my top four in the line up today. Tasting very bright and fresh, with tart apple and a fine mousse - long finish. Had nice lift and energy - surprised this was a '93. 7 pennies voted by group - 1 penny voted by me.
