Australian Syrah/Shiraz Night

When in Singapore, I always search out good Australian wine. This trip I happened to connect with a local bank executive who has been selling off some of his personal collection, a perfect opportunity to try a few nice bottles with some age.

• 2006 Clarendon Hills Syrah Hickinbotham 93 Points

  Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon

  Intense smooth, ripe, dark fruit coupled with tar, smoke, tobacco, and a backbone with grip that doesn't overpower. There's a sense of heaviness though that more focus and purity of fruit would have dispelled. Otherwise, years left for this delicious wine to continue its development.

• 2016 The Standish Wine Company Shiraz The Standish 95 Points

  Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

  The youngster of the three wines tasted, and its primary exuberance was contagious. Rich and dark purple core fruit with amazing freshness leads the intense fruit through mid-palate expansion and delivers a lengthy and spicy finish. Fantastic now with a few hours of decanting. This is a wine to follow in the years to come. 95+

• 2002 Torbreck RunRig 96 Points

  Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

  This Barossa was the WOTN. Compared with the 2006 Clarendon Hills Syrah Hickinbotham, this had a light and effortless delivery of intensity. Needs a few hours in the decanter to really hit its stride, and once it does, all that Barossa goodness rolls out in a fully integrated and focused way. Soft and elegant, with mouth-filling blueberry, plum, and dark berries accented with a meaty smoke and spicy finish that goes on and on.
