The Pool - New York NY

Small glass, brief note. Lots of mature peach, bits of lemon peel. Complex spice notes and rich textures for its level, just slightly more mature than ideal.

Small glass, brief note. Floral start with very ripe red cherry and berry start-to-finish. Good weight for its level, fun now but better to wait for the sweetness to soften a little.

Small glass, brief note. Complex array of sweet and tart red and black cherry with subtle spice throughout towards good+ finish. Only nit is a faint bitter hint.

Small glass, brief note. Ripe black fruit in a rustic, old school style with lots of meat, but still plenty of rough edges.

Small glass, brief note. Very ripe nose, more restrained palate with density not quite living up to its Grand Cru pedigree. Good now, doubt there is upside.

Small glass, brief note. Rich black and red cherry with excellent purity. Still some baby fat that needs to dissipate, but complex hints are peaking through. Better 2025-.

Small glass, brief note. Magnum. Fresh and bright through, expanding and getting richer and richer as it goes. Charming start-to-finish.

Small glass, brief note. In Leflaive 99 horizontal. Very reductive, but lots here. Tough to enjoy when popped and poured.

Small glass, brief note. Leflaive 1999 horizontal. Wow, stunning on nose and palate. Floral with rich, ripe peach and apple cobbler. So much here. Best I can ever recall for this great wine.

Small glass, brief note. Also slightly reductive, but lots of great stuff.

Small glass, brief note. Complex assortment of stone and orchard fruit, so ripe yet precise and linear with a brightly textured, long finish. As great as always.

Small glass, brief note. Magnum. Intensely rich with subtle spice and floral charm that will likely becomes more Pronounced as the ripeness softens. Lush start, bright and well textures finish.

Small glass, brief note. Rich combination. Go ripe fruit, spice and earth. Good weight, great harmony.

Small glass, brief note. Tasted just after 1990, this is much harder and more tannic, but also showing lots of powerful black fruit. I definitely prefer the 1990 for now AND the future.

Small glass, brief note. Magnum. Nothing shy or reserved about this wine. Big and very rich, but also so firmly structured.

Small glass, brief note. Great nose, but dark and very mature.

Small glass, brief note. Double blind. Lots of dense and complex black fruit with elegant textures, great length. Clearly 1980s Bordeaux, correctly identified as a great 1982.

Small glass, brief note. Ripe and. Maturing black and red cherry. Not at all classically it’s elegantly Volnay, but very rich and enjoyable.

Lots of red fruit with spice hints and bright textures that showcase whole cluster perfectly. Great balance and complexity, with just good enough density for Grand Cru. In its peak window.

Badly corked

Small glass, brief note. Double blind. Immediately thought great 1985 Vosne Grand Cru. Layers kept unfolding so quickly that this wine’s “Leroy-ness” was also apparent. Magic.

Small glass, brief note. Equal amount of red fruit, spice and earth with great textures. Grand Cru density. But firm finish. Upside?

Small glass, brief note. Had been open a few hours and was clearly getting very tired. I was told it was good earlier in the evening.

Small glass, brief note. Lush black fruit that effortlessly retains energy and balance through long finish.

Small glass, brief note. First time tasting since En Primeur. So rich, ripe and dense but still massively backward for me.

Small glass, brief note. Direct from Domaine. Lots here but I fear ever-so-slightly corked.

Small glass, brief note. Dense, powerful but still so brooding. For how long can I say that I like a wine’s potential?.

Small glass, brief note. Rich and near tropical to start, then leaner towards finish. Good weight and length, good now.

Small glass, brief note. Very rich start seemed fully mature, but this brightened up in the 15 seconds being tasted, ending as a powerhouse with so much concentration, and just fresh enough.

Small glass, brief note. Very ripe (too much), but also very amazingly concentrated for its level.

Small glass, brief note. So dense for 1er Cru with the vintage richness, ending with Chablis brightness and textures. Long finish is the highlight.

Small glass, brief note. Extremely bright with apple and lemon. Long and energetic, not even close to ready with its tightly coiled energy.

Small glass, brief note. Very rich but clearly getting tired.

Small glass, brief note. Tasted blind. Earth and mushroom and red cherry with spice. I thought 1989 Vosne Grand Cru. Very concentrated with a weightless and charming texture.

Slightly oxidized.

Only gave this 15-30 minutes of air, which wasn’t enough. Density and intense concentration on finish came through loud and clear. Mostly ripe apple, some tartness in the middle adds nuance. Great now with upside.

Small glass, brief note. Black fruit and braised meat with plenty of earth. Less fresh or intense vs the best bottles.

Small glass, brief note. Ripe red cherry and berry with so much flavor and textural complexity. Kept unfolding and unfolding again.

Small glass, brief note. Another magnum. This morning’s glorious. This was oxidizing.

Small glass, brief note. Magnum from Domaine. Wonderful elegant and textures with so many nooks and crannies. Delicious now and good weight.

Small glass, brief note. Ripe and fleshy but with earth and complex spice in a very old schools style. Starts out I tresting, ends as exciting.

Small glass, brief note. Very ripe, but more balanced than most 2003s. Black cherry throughout with bright enough finish.

Corked

Small glass, brief note. Double blind. Clearly Leroy Vosne, I thought it charming with great red fruit, baking spice and balance, but not quite as dense as her Beaux Monts typically shows (so I thought this Genaivrières). Still, so wonderful now.

Small glass, brief note. Rich start but impeccable balance and a bright, linear finish with so much complexity for its level.

Small glass, brief note. Dark color, but still very bright with mostly baked apple and almost sweet spice. Very rich start-to-finish.

Small glass, brief note. All black fruit, just a baby now, backward but teasing us with its density. Will there be lots of flavor and textural nuance? None for now, but really impressive potential, 91 points now, but vertically upside from there 91-93 points. Better 2025-.

Fully mature red and black cherry with
Impressive depth and a spice component that just screams “VOSNE!” Slightly sweet in the middle through finish from maturing wine that is madeirizing elegantly and gracefully. So delicious.

Small glass, brief note. Tasted double blind Oman evening full of Burgundy, so this got slightly lost. However, easily identifiable as Riesling. Rich apple with apple cobbler spice and character, but I thought it Kabinett level based on the moderate sweetness. Good richness and structure working well together. I enjoyed this more than others at my table.

Green and yellow apple with lemon flesh and lemon peel. So powerful throughout, with massive energy bursting at the seams. Enjoyable now, but clearly several years from really strutting its stuff.

Popped and poured, then enjoyed with a burger over the next hour. Lots of red fruit with good weight and better balance. Good combination of ripe and tart cherry, with nothing overtly under-ripe, like too many 2011s. Very good now.

1990 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 94 Points
France, Champagne
Walk around tasting. So rich with apple and baked apple notes, with richness coming from everywhere, yet simultaneous structure and grace. Two bottles tasted, this one was better than the other.

2009 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Walk around tasting. From magnum. Very rich and powerful with clear Grand Cru density and so much stuffing, yet this didn't seem classically Chablis or particularly minerally, even on its (very long) finish. For Grand Cru Chablis, I would say this is "92 points" today, but I just think it needs more time and will show better with more cellar time, so I choose to be an optimist. But I would prefer other vintages for this great wine (first time I have tasted this 2009).

2013 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Walk around tasting. From magnum. Floral start with ripe apple, baked apple, apple pie. Wonderful fruit and spice throughout with good+ weight, but not quite as concentrated as this wine can be in the greatest vintages.

2010 Domaine de Montille Corton-Charlemagne
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Walk around tasting. From magnum. Lots here, but seemingly very shut down. Very good length, but not particularly forthcoming. Needs more time.

2004 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Walk around tasting. From magnum. Stunning aromatic start with spice, late summer flowers and both ripe and tart apple. Similar flavors with unctuous textures. Best I can ever recall for this wine, but I do find that magnum format is always beneficial for Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet. One of today's highlights.

1990 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Walk around tasting. Ripe black fruit is fully mature with at least as much earth and cooked mushroom. Very good density, with enough complexity to keep it interesting. No further upside, time to drink up before it fades.

1999 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Walk around tasting. Open a couple of hours before serving, but this simply needed more air. Glorious nose of complex black and red fruit with spice notes. Clearly a great wine is emerging here. Dense and powerful but just too backward and rugged from middle through finish. Clearly 96+ point potential, but this needs more time and/or air.

2006 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Walk around tasting. From magnum. Ripe black fruit with simply massive tannic structure. Very good density and length, but so backward there was barely any pleasure emerging today. Good potential, but unclear to me when that would be. If served blind, I would have thought this to be a 2005 Grand Cru.

1990 Château Haut-Brion 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Walk around tasting. Plenty of black cherry, cassis, earth and tobacco. Evolving gracefully with impressive weight and length. The only bad thing to say is that it isn't the 1989.

1964 Château Lafleur 94 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Walk around tasting. Still so much rich fruit, but an earthy and meaty component that is perfectly complementary. Glorious nose, still slightly grippy on finish.

1952 Château Palmer 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Walk around tasting. Earth, spice, meat, cedar and yes, still some black fruit. Not the most concentrated of today's Bordeaux, but certainly the most elegant. A real treat.

1934 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Walk around tasting. Lots of earth, cigarbox, with fully matured memories of black fruit. Certainly very interesting and enjoyable, but a wine I consider more interesting than tasty.

1967 Michele Mascarello & Figli Barolo Riserva Speciale 92 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Walk around tasting. This was just dirty enough that some people wondered if it were corked, but I just think dirty...in mostly good ways. Dried roses and black pepper with anise and elegant textures to longish, soft finish

1971 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Small glass, brief note. Just plain tired with a firm, structured finish.

1978 Cantina Mascarello Barolo 93 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Walk around tasting. Bright red cherry, surprisingly fresh for its age with licorice and floral notes in the near background, plus earth just slightly further back. Enough of everything in wonderful proportion with wonderful balance and good enough weight.
