Tasting new offerings in the upside down market. Best wines/values were the NZ Sauvignon Blancs, the Washington Pinot Gris, and the Chianti. Tasted blind by a group of four.
2016 Les Domaines Paul Mas Vin de Pays d'Oc Mas des Tannes Chardonnay Grenache Blanc
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
This is a wine at the end of its drinkable window. The nose is slight caramel and cardboard. Still balanced but with a cloying tannic finish. It is barely passable and totally forgettable. Being sold wholesale at $3 a bottle, I would cook with it at best.

2018 Bodegas Protos Verdejo Rueda 84 Points
Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda
Very lightly floral, citrus but totally drinkable for one glass with a decent balance, not sure I would go for a second glass. Very little varietal character, fairly anonymous and at $13 pushing being overpriced.

2019 Château de Costis Cuvée Spéciale 84 Points
France, Bordeaux
Pure grassy and grapefruit flavors, very lean and crisp, with some skin tannin. The nose is more promising than the mouth, which is far lighter than you would expect. For $11 it is a decent but not perfect value. Not sure how this one will age, it may improve and get some body.

2017 Castello di Meleto Chianti Classico 88 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Classic minty slightly cherry nose, this is a really good value Chianti. It did need some air to blossom as initially it had a hint of rustic character. Would buy for near 1-2year term.

2018 J. Albin Pinot Grigio Lorelle 86 Points
USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
Easy summer stuff, color is light straw with a touch of bronze. Crisp and fresh, light in body, moderate alcohol, this wine is not overpowering distinct but quite drinkable as an everyday wine and at $10 is is a value.

2018 Colterenzio Schreckbichl Pinot Grigio
Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol
This wine was bitter for me. The nose was attractive with fresh apple notes but in the mouth was so bitter.

2019 Ngatarawa Sauvignon Blanc Glazebrook Regional Reserve 88 Points
New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Lovely grapefruit, green pepper, almost cat pee flavors. Great balance and linger. Lighter style but attractive because it is lean. Around $15 is a value.

2019 The Crossings Sauvignon Blanc 89 Points
New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough, Awatere Valley
This has a bit more substance than the Glazebrook, quite similar in many ways such as the aromatics which are catty and green pepper, but a touch of residual sugar and more weight. Needs food to shine.

2019 Wairau River Sauvignon Blanc 90 Points
New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
Crisp balanced and fresh, an SB with lots of finesse. I like last month and still do this month.

2019 Château Lauriga Côtes du Roussillon Rosé 86 Points
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon
I was hoping this would be a contender for a summer rose because the package was so lovely. Nice bottle and a vinolock closure. It was good, a little lean and tannic with modest freshness and balance but unfortunately for the same price point or less I have seen much nicer wines with more fruit and cleaner structure and finish. Also slightly less pricey. One of those, Acquiesce, is equally a lovely package and a much better wine.

2018 Colterenzio Schreckbichl St. Magdalener

Buttery rhubarb flavors with a dose of black pepper, a very light red. Tannic and bitter well into the finish. Pass

2018 Il Palazzotto Diano d'Alba Sori Cristina 75 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Diano d'Alba
Very developed red, some oak and smoke, bit of spice but way too much bitter tannin. Not distinct as a Dolcetto this would be an bring down any meal

2018 Il Palazzotto Diano d'Alba Sörì Santa Lucia 80 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Diano d'Alba
Dark enough color but aromatically non-discript. Heavy flesh with lots of tannin and a course finish. One glass would be too much.
