Social distancing blind tasting

Introduction

We shared 1/3 of a bottle with each other and then virtually tasted them blind. Fun times, great wines. I miss pre-pandemic times for sure.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2017 Domaine Belluard Gringet Vin de Savoie Le Feu 94 Points

    France, Savoie, Vin de Savoie

I am obsessed with these wines, and this one showed wonderfully. Deep yellow color. Crunchy aromas of candied orange peel, yellow and green apples, with lemon crème, sea salt, some olive oil and raw almond notes. The palate is rushing and exciting with a mountain stream and cold ocean wave aesthetic. Lemon peel, orange, key lime, kumquat fruit (gorgeous fresh, crunchy fruit). Complex notes of chalk, mineral, quinine, limestone - just all sorts of amazing depth here. Blind, my friends were wondering Muscadet, natty Pacific Northwest, Chablis, Alpine wines. It got even better the next day and really does well in a decanter. This deserves age and my respect.

  • 2010 R. López de Heredia Rioja Rosado Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia 94 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Medium copper color. An interesting mix of racy, spicy, complex aromas: watermelon rind, rosemary, mint, candle wax, cherry jam and candied orange peel. The palate shows briskness and tartness but a gorgeous depth of texture, with this waxy but refined mouthfeel. Red apple, watermelon and juicy red cherry fruit is pure and lively, but backed with complex cheese rind, tobacco, mint, oregano, some clay and read rose bush notes. So fresh, a long ager. So, I tasted this blind and knew it immediately, I just didn't know what vintage it was. This one is one to age, as it is gorgeous right now but tons to unpack. The next day it was crazy complex. Lovely wine.

  • 2017 Davenport Vineyards Pinot Noir Diamond Fields 91 Points

    United Kingdom, England, Kent

Medium ruby color. Gorgeous nose of red cherries and raspberries, with pepper, rhubarb, rose petal, incense sticks - really inviting. Crisp and cool on the palate, juicy and fresh , pretty and brisk with red plums, ripe cherries, raspberry. I get complex notes of pepper, rhubarb, leather, some mineral and red licorice tones. Tasted blind, upon sniffing, I immediately thought of Santa Cruz Mountain Pinot Noir. But after tasting, I kept thinking Morgon, with these red fruits and mineral, earth, savory elements. Either way, I was completely stoked on this wine, while sort of knowing that it was something unexpected. Sure enough, English Pinot Noir. Eye-opening wine.
