Flight 1 (22 Notes)

  • 2005 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

From magnum. Highly floral, bath salts, lemon curd and plenty of vanilly. Sweet honeyed flavour, good intensity and tangy acidity to cut through. Good length and balance here.

  • 2009 Henri Boillot Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Woody, ginger, orange peel. The palate is touched by a light ox note but it still has the fruit power to cover it up. Just on the right side of being good to drink, with excellent depth and texture. Absolutely the right time to open this particular bottle.

  • 2017 Coche-Dury Meursault 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Mineral slate, lifted nose with apple, pear and a little bit of flint. Lively and long, with fine acid line. Beautifully balanced, exceptional length. Undoubtable quality.

  • 2004 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Spice, lemon and pear on the nose - took some time to coax out but ended up lifting very nicely with time in the glass. Lovely palate, delicious with super length. Composed, with depth and presence.

  • 2008 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Sherbet, lemon, pear, lime and white florals. Very pure and full on the palate with a slate undertone. Delicious, mineral and pure. Think I have one more of these, another 5-10 years would be lovely.

  • 2008 Egon Müller/Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Honeyed, orange and peaches. Sweet and full, ripe and rich - very different next to the 2008 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Kabinett. Still finishes nicely with enough cleansing acid. Might show more with time?

  • 1985 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Raspberry, earth, cinnamon, roses and blueberry. Great balance and harmony with lithe, earthy fruit and flavour. Spot on and in the absolute zone for drinking right now, a spectacular bottle of this wine.

  • 1995 Domaine Thomas-Moillard Romanée St. Vivant 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Cherry, licorice, red berries and classic Vosne spice. Red fruit profile carries onto the palate as well, but there is a line of intense acid that sweeps through, making this feel much younger. Fantastic.

  • 2010 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Stems, with lots of raspberry, redcurrant and violets on the nose. Sumptuous and full palate, there is a swath of red fruit with so much depth and texture sitting there to give it interest. Really spectacular wine that just kept getting better in the glass.

  • 2013 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Lifted and bright nose with roses, musk and graphite. Very refined on the palate, excellent balance with that same fresh fruit and acid lift. Got roughed up a little next to the 2010 Ponsot CdlR, but this was still excellent.

  • 2000 Parusso Barolo Bussia Vigna Munie 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Blackberry, blueberry, cherry and tar. Rich smoky fruit profile on the palate. Sweet and savoury in a really nice way. More time left here, but no harm at all in approaching it now.

  • 1969 Château Latour Grand Vin 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Boot polish, violets, autumn leaves, cherry and graphite. Still showing some grip and fruit. This is in really good nick. Standing strongly at this age, very happy with this bottle.

  • 1975 Château Latour Grand Vin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Perfumed and lifted nose - violets, blackberry and redcurrants. Plenty of tannin here but the sweet fruit creeps up and mingles well. Has depth and complexity here, not in any danger of falling over when its a great bottle like this one!

  • 1995 Château Latour Grand Vin 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Graphite, blood, iron and aniseed with a little bit of animale as well. Tannins make their presence felt on the palate. Youthful fruit profile with that ferrous character coming through as well. Tight and coiled up.

  • 1994 Pétrus 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Graphite, charcoal, smoke, meat, game and briar characters. Smoky and meaty on the palate as well, along with some sweet fruit showing through. In a delicious spot development wise, really impressive for such a vintage.

  • 2012 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Violet, red berries, blackcurrant, charred oak, plum and cherry. Sweet and full, this is quite intense with its bold fruit body. Does have the structure to hold up to it, though it is a forceful wine that likely needs more time. Keep holding.

  • 2007 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Day 1: Plum, dark florals, licorice, raisin and some VA/petrol characters. Acid lines the palate, with super strong intensity of fruit as well. Not what I think of when I think Rayas.

Day 2: Still showing a hefty VA lift with punchy ripe red fruits and some cocoa, starting to show more peppery spice on both the nose and palate versus what I saw on Friday as well - still feels like its staining the palate with the ripe fruit but getting a bit more sense of the layers underneath - I actually think the best glass was the last one tonight - wasn't showing any signs of slowing down.

  • 2018 Wendouree Shiraz 93 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Bright nose - violets, plum, rose and blackcurrant. Really fine balance even so early on, the fruit is bright and clean, this is the essence of purity for Shiraz. Has lift and verve to it. Fantastic even with how young it is.

  • 2017 Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Duck Muck 92 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote

Blind. Very intense nose - red and blackberries, smoke, lots of clove and ash. The palate is surprisingly not as full on (especially when I find out it is 15.4% alcohol later on). Long and while it is certainly sweet, it doesn't seem to be over the top. Very well crafted.

  • 1990 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Vin de Paille 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Licorice, honey, lemon, woody and waxy notes along with some bruised apple. The palate is mildly sweet and a little on the simple side. Still good but doesn't feel compelling, especially given the kind of pricing we are talking here.

  • 2001 Müller-Catoir Mußbacher Eselshaut Riesling Eiswein 96 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

Orange peel, lemon, pineapple, mango and pear - an absolutely cavalcade of aromas on the nose. The palate builds with every sip, it is expansive and has incredible length. Pure, fresh, deep, sweet and delicious. Sweet wine on another level.

  • NV Valdespino Moscatel Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Toneles 90 Points

    Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry

Shoe polish, brown sugar, raspberry and woody notes on the nose. Really sugar driven, with some volatility thrown in for good measure. The VA doesn't quite lift up against the sweetness enough, leaving it feeling a bit mono dimensional. Doesn't mesh with other reviews, so not sure what happened here.
