Introduction

Monthly tasting for my cellar, have been buying a bit in the last few months and at 72 don't want wines to over age before I get to them. Only buying for specific gaps in my cellar. Lots of fun wines out there.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2019 Cantina Produttori del Gavi Gavi Il Forte 86 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Gavi

Full bodied, off dry but acid balanced, very developed and supple, the nose is creamy with a slight hint of caramel. Pleasant (but not particularly distinct) right now for $11, but I am not sure that it has much time left that it will be like that.

  • 2020 Pascal Janvier Coteaux du Loir 85 Points

France, Loire Valley, Coteaux du Loir

Clean and simple white, balanced and crisp, but I could not find much character and at $18 no sale.

  • 2019 Roland Lavantureux Chablis Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Chablis

Lovely wine far better that the previous month. Classic profile and great linger, definite aging potential. I did't buy because I am well stocked on Chablis and I am trying work down my inventory. Probably will be sorry but will save the $35 a bottle for another time.

  • 2019 Tenuta La Pergola Monferrato Il Goccetto Selected by Kermit Lynch 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Monferrato

Priced down to $11, still love this as an everyday red with ample personality and crowd appeal. Hard to beat at $11.

  • 2017 Vino Noceto Sangiovese Riserva 87 Points

USA, California, Sierra Foothills, California Shenandoah Valley

I want to support local wineries and this is a good wine but for $30 or less I can get far better Sangiovese. No flaws in this wine except for the integration of flavors. The cherry is there, the spice of wood is there, the tannin is there and they are not in total harmony. I would not avoid this wine on a wine list, it would good to try it over a meal and down the road it may come together. As for now not for my cellar.

  • 2018 Faiveley Mercurey Clos Rond 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey

I was impressed and transported back to a tasting in the Faiveley cellar in the 80's, strong color, impressive and classic nose. It hit all the points nicely, well worth the $29.

  • 2020 Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny 89 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny

Tasted last month also, Really a solid classic Loire CF. Having looked at my cellar I passed because I have a good stock of similar CF and I will drink my cellar instead for the moment. That said, I do recommend this wine to all who love a steak and pomme frites.

  • 2019 Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba

Loved this wine, really nice Barbera. Dark, supple and well balanced. Decent price at $23. Highly recommend. With a year in the bottle, hard to beat.

  • 2017 Cascina Cà Gialla Barolo 78 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

I have far better plain Langhe Nebbiolos. This was weak to the point of watery and extremely tannic. Punish yourself for $30. I passed

  • 2019 Sante Arcangeli Family Wines Pinot Noir Integrato 88 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Light but all the SLH flavor notes are there, a lovely Pinot. Balanced and supple. Recommend at $30

  • 2019 Hiruzta Hondarrabi Beltza Getariako Txakolina 87 Points

    Spain, País Vasco, Getariako Txakolina

A lighter supple red that would go well with seafood, clean finish and well balanced. At $17 solid but anonymous, worth a flyer if you want something new. I have had this Basque red in Pamplona and I think that you need to be there to really appreciate it. Working on that.
