  • 2021 Pierre-Marie Chermette Moulin-à-Vent Les Trois Roches 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent

ruby colour and medium-ish body. bubblegum, raspberry, fresh herbs and soil notes on the nose. a bit tight in the mouth at the moment, the earthiness gives way to black cherries and dark fruit compote flavours that gain in concentration but are balanced by a mineral and tannic backbone. good length.

this is too young at the moment and will need a bit of time to really come together.

13% AbV; from three different vineyard plots with ~40y.o. vines; whole-cluster semi-carbonic fermentation; aged 50% in foudre and 50% in barrels used from once to five times

  • 2021 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly

ruby and medium-bodied and with funk that does blow off. then the nose begins to evolve regaling at various times red and dark fruits, currants and raspberries, wet earth and powdery cocoa, fresh sappy herbs and dried savoury spice… it is dry and the somewhat bitter notes on the entry give way to a fresh, minty feel that envelopes the red and blue fruit flavours as they unfold. peppery and dusty tones take hold on the back end thru the finish.

it feels very "traditional" or timeless… quite drinkable now, but one to give a couple of years of bottle age.

13.5% AbV; whole-cluster fermentation from ~50y.o. vines; six months ageing in foudres

  • 2021 Marcel Lapierre Morgon Cuvée Camille 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

dark ruby and light-medium body. dusty nose with red fruits and whiffs of clove, cinnamon and fresh herbs. fresh and fruity on the entry with a high-toned acidity that mellows as the minerality takes hold. some shades of nuance in the fruit appear mid-palate and continue to darken in tone toward the finish as the somewhat drying tannins kick in. lovely bittersweet notes on the finish.

very drinkable now, i do expect it'll gain complexity with a couple more years of bottle age.

12.5% AbV; from vines that range from 50-75 years old; whole-cluster fermentation; aged on the lees in neutral foudres and barrels for nine months

  • 2020 Domaine Lafarge-Vial Chiroubles

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Chiroubles

coloured bright ruby and with an equally inviting and open nose of bright red fruit with blue accents, whiffs of coriander and sap, and a base of rocky soil. a backbone of ripe tannins tames the fruity juicy entry; spice notes start to show mid-palate and go all the way to the moderately long finish.

i would give this wine a couple to a handful of years. there is a lot of promise here.

13% AbV; from ~50y.o. vines; 15-25% whole cluster fermented in concrete tank; ageing in used barrels for around a year

  • 2020 Domaine Lafarge-Vial Fleurie 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

bright purplish ruby and nose that is somewhat slow to open… but once some alcohol fumes pass, it shows lovely red and blue fruit, wet and dry earthiness, and a sweetened gaminess. much more open in the mouth, it is juicy and fruity. good tension between the acidity and the fine earthy tannins as the fruit flavours show different brightnesses accented by spice notes. good length.

well balanced and accessible, will get even better without a doubt.

13.5% AbV; vines are 40-70y.o.; 15% whole cluster fermented in concrete tank; ageing in used barrels for around a year

  • 2020 Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Côte du Py 92 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

dark garnet and medium-plus bodied. very generous nose of a melange of red berries, forest floor, smokey whiffs, some drying roses, and blood orange. concentrated and intense in every way in the mouth, it has lovely balance. the fruit flavours are rich, the acidity is high, the minerality is palpable, and the tannins are firm while polished. good persistence.

very good now, likely better in a couple of years.

13% AbV; vines at least 50y.o.
