Introduction

Our host gave us one hint - that almost all the wines were owned by the same company. So at the end, we learned the theme was:

"An Evening with Artemis Domaines"

Flight 1 - Apertif (1 Note)

We were late, but they saved us one glass...

  • NV Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Cuvée No. 744 Extra Brut

    France, Champagne

Tasted blind - perfect color and lots of tiny bubbles in the glass, lots of yellow apple and white fruit on the nose. Good acidity on the palate, a touch of oxidation, and balanced sweetness. More green apple and lemon. I thought this had some age on it - even though still fresh. I was wrong, called a 1998 from a big house. Disgorged Nov. 2022.

Flight 2 - First Course (2 Notes)

Lobster Bisque, Grilled Artisan Bread

Flight 3 - Second Course (2 Notes)

Crab Louie Salad

  • 2017 Château-Grillet (Pinault) Château-Grillet

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Château-Grillet

Tasted blind - light in the glass; highly acidic, but not bracing or off putting acidity. Floral nose, dry on the palate with lots of white and stone fruit. Guessed a 2015 Sauv Blanc, but really didn’t know where to go.

  • 2018 Eisele Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasted blind - big nose - cat pee, grapefruit, stone fruit. Off putting to me at first. It screamed white Bordeaux. Highly acidic on the palate. With air and a vinaigrette salad, it was quite resolved, however and refreshing. This wasn’t the first time I’ve called an Eisele Sauvignon Blanc a white Bordeaux. A high quality wine, that needs some air. But it turns into a delicious Bordeaux style wine.

Flight 4 - Third Course (5 Notes)

Pan Seared Beef Tenderloin, Mushroom Ragout, Butter Whipped Potatoes

  • 2016 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru

Tasted blind - fairly dark, but transparent in the glass. Lots of fruit and earth, a bit of cola. High acid. It’s crazy to me that I tasted this wine blind two weeks in a row, after never tasting it before. This one was more tightly wound than the previous one, but wasn’t decanted as long. I called it a 2017 Clos de Tart because it tasted even younger than the previous one I had. Still delicious, and without any hints would have called it a California pinot.

  • 2001 Araujo Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasted blind - deep red in the glass, but still some transparency. Nose of stewed red fruit and leathery cherry. On the palate, there were still decent but integrated tannins. Really nice structure to this wine. Flavors of medicinal cherry, some stewed fruits, mushroom. A delicious wine, and for my palate, the perfect time to drink. I called a 20+ year old left bank bordeaux. My favorite wine of the night.

  • 2013 Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasted blind (from magnum) - deep and dark in the glass. Sweet red fruit on the nose, with wood influence. Dark cherry and blue fruits on the palate. In a primary phase, with no tertiary development. This one is all fruit at this point (at least from a magnum). Medium + tannins. I called a 10 years or less CA cab.

  • 2010 Les Forts de Latour

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted blind - whoa this one was big. Very deep and dark in the glass, translucent at best. Lots of red fruit and wood on the nose. Sweet red fruit, mixed with black fruit, on the palate. Huge tannins, that were in the way. This wine needs a lot more time to be anything close to classic Bordeaux. A Napa cab lover would be into it though. I was convinced we were in Bordeaux, but I guessed a left bank from mid 2000s.

  • 2005 Château Latour Grand Vin

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Tasted blind - fairly light in the glass. Nose of tertiary things - some leather, mushrooms. Raspberry and olives on the palate. I didn’t know where to go here. It was tasty but not fully developed. I ended up guessing a right bank bordeaux because I thought there was some cab franc and maybe merlot. I think with more time, this will evolve beautifully.

Flight 5 - Fourth Course (1 Note)

Creme Brulee with mixed berries

  • 2001 Château d'Yquem

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Tasted blind - light-ish gold in the glass. Sweet apricot, stone fruit, marmalade. Last wine of the night after a bunch, so not great notes. But delicious and still very primary. Guessed a 10 year old Y’quem.
