Introduction

Here are some notes on a couple of White Burgundies consumed over the weekend...

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Pale yellow colour with a green hue. Very closed on the nose, and over the course of four hours the bouquet did not open up. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied with a good oily texture. There's ample fruit structure. This Les Clos is much more minerally than what I usually find Les Clos to be. The flavours ranged from green apple peel and lemon to chalk, iron, and vitamins. Elegant and stylish with a smooth and round finish. Extremely reserved at this stage - and to no-one's surprise - ferouciously acidic at this point.

  • 2000 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Medium yellow colour. The bouquet revealed notes of Fried mushrooms, wet soil, roasted nuts and smoke (in many ways this wine smelled like a red wine). Medium bodied with a great fat oily flow. Good structure and definition with the trademark Lafon sweet vanilla/chocolate-like core of flavour. The acidity is quite forgiving, even at this early stage. Delicious aftertaste on notes of vanilla, citrus and lemon.

Closing

The Dauvissat was searing with acidity which is probably not a surprise to anyone. Moreover, it was completely closed on the nose, even with air and a good temperature in the glass - around 57 F. There did seem to be some good underlying material so the experts are probably right on this one. If memory serves me correctly, Tanzer really liked this wine.

The Meursault was textbook Lafon. I love his style of winemaking, even if he does seem to push the envelope on the toast form time to time.
