Introduction

The inaugural WSET wine club tasting event, focusing on the delights of Bordeaux. Whilst a nice mix of appellations were sampled, we also added some new world Bordeaux blends for comparison.

Flight 1 - Merlot based blends (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Château Moulinet 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Instantly this wine makes its intentions known. Deep ruby, and intense raw power that screams out of the glass. Oak, cedar, very rich with creamy notes. The merlot's dominance is quite apparent and this wine clearly has long way to go; and if this early showing is indicative of the class of 05, then we are in for a treat in a few years. Further notes of fruit pudding emerge with time and this has good medium length and firm tannins and acidity. All in, this will take time, but will be worth the wait! Expect to see the score improve as the constituents integrate.

  • 2004 Antucurra Calvulcura 88 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco

Deep ruby appearance, and a youthful nose of sweet rich fruit. Slight red jam notes and quite fresh and almost sour cherry notes come through. Green peppers fill the mouth, along with sour cherry and black currant. Medium tannins don't dominate and this blend is drinking very well now, but certainly has a few years in it yet. Different to the Bordeaux here, but shines in its own style. Very good

Flight 2 - 2 vintages from the medoc (3 Notes)

  • 2004 Château Ferrière 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Deep ruby with classical bordeaux nose. Blackfruits, cassis, not massive but elegant. This is quite polished and has a silky mouthfeel, very seductive tannins and seem nicely balanced. Not a blockbuster, and could certainly benefit from time in the bottle. Very good example

  • 2005 Château Ferrande 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves

Deep ruby, with a good upfront attack of cedar and oak nuances. This is immediately supported by an unusual vegetal core. Roast vegetables, and pungent, but in an interesting manner that makes you return for more. The ripeness of the vintage shines through again (these 05's are great!) and with its structure this wine has a bright future ahead of it. After time further notes of mocha and blueberries evolve. Great stuff.

  • 2004 Château Léoville Barton La Réserve de Léoville Barton 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Deep ruby with floral notes of elderflower, and unusually, an orange note, or orange blossom. Big tannins, great acidity and medium bodied. The nose is really interesting and evolves continuously in the glass. A lot of black fruit coat the palette and this wine would also benefit with more age. Not the power of the 05' but more elegant and focused at this current time. A great companion with food.

Flight 3 - Cahors and Argentina (malbec & tannat) (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Domingo Molina Rupestre 91 Points

    Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta

Garnet colour, and waves of pleasant sweet aromas. All types of tomato - plum, salad, baby and sweet, all slightly toasted, or grilled with black and white pepper. A lot going on and this continues on the palette, as the 'english breakfast' is garnished with liquorice and black fruits. Great drinking now and quite classy.

  • 2006 Château du Cèdre Malbec Cahors Cèdre Heritage 88 Points

    France, Southwest France, Cahors

Ruby red, with cherry, coconut oak of medium intensity. Quite herby nose, perhaps tarragon and cherry. Very fresh and quite young, however drinking well with great structure. Has a roast tomato feel and is nicely medium bodied. A good effort
