Introduction

Went to Chicago to celebrate Phil's BDay, amazing wine weekend with amazing wine and good friends.

Flight 1 - day 1, hanging around Phil's place (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir Southing

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

    (7/23/2009)

very nice nose with a mid palate of smoke, cherry, leather and tight tannic structure. There was something off on the aftertaste, others did not think so but I could not get around the sharp, burnt taste. Nose and midpalate were very good, still could use more time

  • 2005 Kistler Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    (7/23/2009)

massive sulfur on this bottle, finally went away about 24 hours later as my wife saved a glass in the fridge. Nice citrus tones with a deep core of oak and butter, the taste was very nice but hard to get past the nose

Flight 2 - Dinner at Bristol (7 Notes)

  • 2005 Peter Michael Chardonnay La Carrière

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

    (7/24/2009)

just loved this wine. PM is my favorite US producer behind Marcassin. This was rich, lush and just singing right out of bottle. Nice lanolin texture with lemon, apricots and vanilla. Very opulent as always with a complex oak structure and layers of richness.

  • 1979 Château Ausone

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    (7/24/2009)

this wine was kicking butt. Had a bit of a metallic aftertaste at first which freaked me out a bit, but it opened up wit a very feminine style with silky red fruits, a touch of tobacco and a beautifully balanced midpalate that was highlighted with sone light tar and chocloate. Very elegant and streamlined. Probably was better a few years ago, but a great wine

  • 1961 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    (7/24/2009)

Had this wine twice in two days! This thing was still humming, tasted far younger than a '61. A masculine profile with rich dark fruits, an earthy core and tobacco.

  • 2001 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

    (7/24/2009)

Really rich bold wine that felt out of place with these well aged Bordeaux's. It was kind of hard to drink a wine that young on this night. The wine itself was beautiful with plums, vanilla, and some mocha tones. Masseto's are so elegant and silky, despite the power this was very smooth and balanced. A great wine I would love to have again in a different setting

  • 1971 Pétrus

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

    (7/24/2009)

my first Petrus, and worth the wait. Absolute pure balance and a wine of elegance and silk like very few others. Very sweet dark fruits with some coffee, chocolate and leather. So refined and balanced, just hard to find any flaw in this

  • 1995 Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

    (7/24/2009)

really liked this wine, it was not talked about much compared to the Ausone, Petrus and the '61 Lynch bages, but this was worth some conversation. Very earthy with tar, dark black fruits and a gritty tannic structure with toasty oak. Really liked this wine

Flight 3 - wine tasting at Knightsbridge in Chicago (14 Notes)

  • 2004 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

    (7/25/2009)

this needed hours of air time and needed some warming up in the glass. Massive wine dominated by lemon and a nutty, mineral mid palate. The depth and complexity of this wine were really showing through. Will be great in many years, just too young for this wine to really show off, bottle went quick, would have loved a taste hours after opening

    (7/25/2009)

apple, honey, and a nice biscuit like aftertaste. Really solid wine, had many years left in bottle, but was amazingly balanced and very refined. When champagne is on, my favorite varietal, and this was definitely on, great wine

    (7/25/2009)

Last wine served after a crazy wine weekend, and fittingly so. sweet sappy red fruits with chocolate, and some spicy and toasted oak. This was still really alive for a 375. Very silky texture and a pure seductive nose and mid palate. A great way to end a crazy week.

  • 2002 Ridge Monte Bello

USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains

    (7/25/2009)

Overlooked by many at the wine tasting due to the other wines (psmith), but this wine had it going on. Dark fruits with cedar and some mocha. Really nice complexity and balance, still a bit young, but really good wine that continues to highlight why Monte Bello is one of the best cali wines out there
