Introduction

Gathering with San and Ser Yee and Ron and Aruna to open a bottle of Sauternes with Cheese and Foie Gras.

  • 1995 Château de Rayne-Vigneau 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Golden yellow, already beginning to take on the deeper hues of age. Glorious nose. Expressive, yet comes across almost understated in its classiness. I got caramel, treacle, dried apricots, orange peel and cream. Interesting palate as well, creamy, texture with mint flavours along with figs, apricots, peach, tangerine and an underlying minerality, all pegged to a lovely freshness. Not exceptional weighty, but plenty of charm and pretty good concentration. Finish was very decent too - a little smoky, pepperminty linger with what I thought was a touch of bitter chocolate rounded the wine off. As would be expected, great pairing with both the Danish Blue cheese as well as the foie gras - especially when toasted slightly.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Côtes du Rhône Lieu-Dit Clavin 89 Points

    Another bottle, again very impressive for its price. Funky earth notes, sour cherries, sandy earth, mineral and meat on the nose. On the palate, lovely velvety tannins, pure sweetish cherries, spice and juicy freshness. Simple, but it was lively, well balanced, well structured with good concentration, great integration and a nice focused feel moving into a shortish, but satisfying finish.

  • 2008 The Ned Pinot Gris 87 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    Pleasant enough. Good aromatics - grass, flowers, sweet fruit, ripe gooseberries, pink guava. Very NZ. Palate was a little disjointed, with disparate elements of smoky mineral, guava and flowers coming across a little loosely knit on the mid-palate. Slightly better on the pleasant finish, which had some length and a sprinkle of ice-cream soda. Run-of-the-mill Kiwi Pinot Grsis, but certainly drinkable.
