Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 1975 Château d'Yquem 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    A great bottle in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. One of the best in fact, just a nose behind the greatest vintages, in my opinion: 01 - 67 - 88.

  • 1976 Château d'Yquem 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Second time I had this vintage, this time in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. Very good, though not as great as the best vintages, in my opinion 01 - 67 - 88.

  • 1971 Château d'Yquem 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    At last d'Yquem of my birthyear! And this in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. Though evidently a great wine, it could not match the best vintages (01 - 67 - 88). Nevertheless a privilege to drink it.

  • 1986 Château d'Yquem 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Quite a surprise, I had no idea 1986 belongs to the truly great years of d'Yquem. But it was great even considering its place in the impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. Though not just as great as the greatest vintages, in my opinion 01 - 67 - 88, still outstanding.

  • 1989 Château d'Yquem 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    A beautiful wine, but just (and only just) behind the greatest vintages in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. My favorites are 01 - 67 - 88. 1989 (and 1990) are very close on their heels.

  • 1990 Château d'Yquem 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    A beautiful wine, but just (and only just) behind the greatest vintages in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. My favorites are 01 - 67 - 88. 1990 (and 1989) are very close on their heels. In fact, before we had 2001 my top 3 was 67 - 88 - 90. But compared to 2001 "only" 99 points out of 100.

  • 1999 Château d'Yquem 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

We had this vintage blind near the end of a tasting of a very impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. My favorites are 01 - 67 - 88. Anyway, when tasting 1999, we were only told this was d'Yquem, evidently not one of the great years already in the line-up, but nothing more. We were completely lost, nobody guessed 1999. I guess this is because 1999 is considered to be a lesser vintage and this wine tasted just great. OK, not as great as the blockbusters we already had, but more than we had expected.

  • 1967 Château d'Yquem 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Tasted at a vertical Yquem tasting at Seinpost (Scheveningen, The Netherlands). For me this was my favorite until we had 2001. But then 2001 blew away virtually all other bottles. We had: 1955, 1967, 1971, 1975, 1976, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1997, 2001 and Climens 2001. My top 3: 2001, 1967, 1988.

  • 1955 Château d'Yquem 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

The oldest wine in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. Some of the tasters found this one the winner of the afternoon, but not me. Although this wine is clearly great, I preferred the younger vintages, like 67, 88 and most of all 01. The person who brought this bottle (Allard Botenga) pointed out that the bottle had leaked for some time (nearly a glass was lost this way), so you had to consider that the wine was a little oxydised. Nevertheless a great wine.

  • 1988 Château d'Yquem 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    I guess this "only" gets 99 out of 100 because it was tasted alongside the other-worldly 2001. One of the last bottles in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. 1988 was my number 3, right after 2001 and 1967. Just great.

  • 1997 Château d'Yquem 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

    Again impressive, especially when considering the line-up of d'Yquem it had to compete in: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. My favorites are 01 - 67 - 88.

  • 2001 Château d'Yquem 100 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

I must admit I was a little skeptical when reading all the halleluja-notes on this wine. But when this wine was tasted last in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem (55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01) I just had to admit this vintage is other-worldly. Before drinking this wine my top-3 was 67 - 88 - 90, after drinking 01 - 67 - 88. This wine is just great, one of the best I ever had.

  • 2001 Château Climens 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

A beautiful wine, tasted blind alongside d'Yquem 2001 in an impressive line-up of d'Yquem: 55, 67, 71, 75, 76, 86, 88, 89, 90, 97, 99, 01. I guessed it was Barsac, but expressed doubts it could be Climens. It was "too sweet" to be Climens I thought. But still it was. Great wine, but I think it is a little closed now. Try again in a few years (if you can!).
