Introduction

As it turned out, this could almost have been called 'Antinori Night'.
Lots of wines, with not much to cheer about. The 1990s carried the day...

    A mostly (thankfully?) closed nose of rotting vegetables. Seems excessively oxidised, with a generally musty quality too. Nasty.

  • 1994 Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva Badia a Passignano

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Some hint of fresh savoury red fruits on the nose. Soft grape tannins on the palate, quite grippy in texture with hard acid. Tart and unfriendly.

  • 1996 Antinori Chianti Classico Marchese Antinori Riserva

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Deep glowing red. Dark herb and smoky farmyard aromas. Very earthy by Australian standards! Crisply acidic, with soft furry tannins, grippy dryness to the texture and a medium weight and length of finish.

    Soft and smooth early-drinking red. A bit bland and nebulous; a soft, well-enough-balanced wine with a short finish. Quaff.

  • 1995 Antinori Tignanello

    Despite a rather murky garnet colour, the wine is clean on the palate. Strong astringent cabernet influence; tannins and plenty of front-palate weight. The savoury sangiovese element is not overshadowed. Pleasantly earthy, but far from an epiphany and at A$85 no bargain...

  • 1995 La Braccesca (Antinori) Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

    Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

    Deep opaque red. Fresh red berries, ripe ones, on the nose. The palate has a really stewed quality to it, massive and tannic. It sits on the front palate clumsily and never really comes into any kind of balance.

    Mid brick red. Focussed black berry nose. Complete wine in the mouth, full, round, ripe and rich. Developed. Balanced with length; soft but with presence. A clear cut above everything else tonight.

    (Hope I created this wine correctly) Mid brick colour. Developed earthy, ‘winey’ nose. Medium body, good balance of acid & tannin, savoury mouthfeel. Good.

  • 1989 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

    Rusty water/orange towards the rim. Pungent nose, almost porty in character. The well-developed palate has an oxidised, rancio-like character to it. Fruit has mostly faded, there’s just a dried out palate of searing astringency which fails to conceal the underlying anorexia. Disappointing.

  • 1992 Mount Horrocks Riesling Cordon Cut

    Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

    Developed and rich. Massively sweet with citric/honey flavours, but lacks the length of finish to be great. Definitely drink now.

  • 1996 De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Sémillon

    Australia, New South Wales, Big Rivers, Riverina

    Usual intense botrytis nose with marmalade/apricot/quince/fig. Very sweet; this was a little lighter in style than usual. May keep it from cloying too much, as recent vintages have been prone to doing.
