Introduction

One of Linden Wilkie's Fine Wine Experience events. The youngest wines were big, chewy, and expensively oaked, but a bit charmless. I found the tannins too obtrusive in most of the 1990s wines. The trio of oldsters 70, 71 and 74 were attractive, but not really exciting.

The reason for going out of chronological order was that these had seemed worrisome to Linden when he had poured them, but in the event the off aromas on the oldest wines blew off and all in all this was the best flight of the tasting

    Pine fragrance, smooth on the palate, and nice to have some tannins integrated, but overall a bit sickly and lacking in charm

  • 1974 Gaja Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn 92 Points

    This needed a bit of swirling to get rid of some bottle stink. First off, the nose was quite vile - volatile, raw, pungent, and I was reluctant to put it in my mouth, but on the palate it was fine, mellow citrus notes and a pine and cedar fragrance, very long - ended up being one of the best wines of the night

    Not much to the nose, but mellow and cedary on the palate, still some grip, fresh still, quite attractive
