    Banana ice cream soda ! for days on end. Very ripe rich white creamy whipped-cream laden english breakfast tea with freshly squeezed dairy milk. It does show its pedigree with its layered mouthfeel of digestive biscuits and sun ripened creamy white fruits. Feels like an 03 vintage but burgundian no doubt. Quite decadent.

  • 2002 Cullen Wines Chardonnay 88 Points

    Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

    Saline fishy salty and grippy . Has poise and a good balance of vanilla ripeness and bitter sweet notes. Wisps of smoke and minerality comes though. Excellent structure , perfectly drinking and very intriguing chard. I really thought this to be a good batard or chassagne montrachet. What a wine and what a burgundian styled aussie chard this is. Excellent!

    Floral , fruity and lightly perfumed. Mildly spicy and comes across as a nice and very enjoyable wine. Affalable but not outspoken. Amazingly though, this has been opened for a few days already. For lasting till now and drinking approachably well, this should be a keeper of a wine.

Flight 4 - The Two Classics (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

    What a nose! Very attractive with pretty florals , some muskiness, and a streak of minerality. Somewhere in between a chambolle and a chambertin. This is young but showing very good potential. A strong body of mid weight juicy cherry / strawberry fruits with a squeeze of japanese plums. All natural fruits , well extracted . Wonderful wine. Pushes all the right official buttons as it should. With time, the bouquet evolved to very soul-enchanting jasmine tea from the cool mountainous regions of some distant mountain in China , shrouded in clouds and plucked by fair skinned maidens on a cool misty day. As delicious as this was, there was an air of bureacracy , no farmer's sweat here, just good iso-certified practices that is dependable and quality proven.

  • 1993 Château Margaux 85 Points

    On first smell, classic aged bordeaux claret and a good one at that too. Lovely nose of florals, tea, milo mocha, beefyness lifted by pessac minerality and graphite.Some sweat too. Doesn't last long but while it lasted for that fleeting moment, it was good. A one night stand worth the troubles to have.

Flight 5 - The Two St Henris (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri 85 Points

    Extremely young and at an awkward adolescent stage. All said, this being an aussie shiraz was not imbalanced and definitely would not qualify as a fruit or alcohol bomb that many of the cultish / parker favoured shirazes tend to be under. On the contrary, the fruits though monolithically robust at the moment with hints of spices does retain its structure on the palate. Not imbalanced but neither is it elegant. This just needs more time. More blackcurrant fruits and a tad exotic as compared to the 2000. Definitely has more stuffing and potential . I am not suprised if a good 10 years might bring out the best of this medium built teenager. Totally not overoaked and stands on its own merit. It is a wine of dividing opinions but unbashedly aussie without being overly patronising to Parker's palate. Most of the classical palates at the table were harshly critical of it though. For me, this was not a wine to fall head over heels for but I thought a very fair to good effort for australia.

  • 2000 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri 83 Points

    Sweeter smelling than the 02 with more ripe black berries and black raspberries. Juicy and succulent . Does need more peppering of spices as expected for a shiraz , in fact, feels like more grenache based than shiraz , which had some at the table calling it a GSM. A fair comment I would say. Rounded and at the start of its drinking window. Definitely more balanced and together than the 02 but differs in structure and stuffing in the mid to end.

Flight 6 - The Two Dessert Wines (2 Notes)

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

    From the nose, really thought more of an aged vouvray with sourish sweet preserved plums and not the usual apricot richness that sauternes deliver. Even on the palate also showing nice roundness and sourness that bends the sweet botrytis flavours to a more savory enjoyable after dinner wine.

  • NV Henri Giraud Ratafia de Champagne 86 Points

    Very interesting, reminds me of white port. On whiff, smells like some plum based liquer drink and a bit brandied too. But delicious on the palate with that roundish savory fruit weight providing a gently sweet ending. Does make one want to reach out for another glass all the time. I like it. Dont mind ending every meal with this .
