Introduction

A very high level introduction to Italian Wine hosted by Martin Hudson MW

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • NV Trevisiol Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Brut

    Italy, Veneto, Prosecco di Valdobbiadene

Nose: Tropical fruit, (inc, oddly enough, banana)
Mouth: surprisingly dry, lovely citric acidity that lingers on the palate

  • 2006 Fattoria La Monacesca Mirum

Italy, Marche, Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva

  • 2005 Corte Sant'Alda Ripasso della Valpolicella Superiore Campi Magri

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Ripasso della Valpolicella Superiore

Nose: Rich red fruit, specifically cherry, then candied fruits - blackberry even(?), lovely bouquet
Mouth: dry, slightly acrid but then some fruit. Very smooth, not much body and not a massive finish but kind of nice none the less. I could see bottles of this evaporating over an evening, rather too quaffable

  • 2006 Morella Primitivo di Manduria Stella Morella

    Italy, Puglia, Primitivo di Manduria

    Nose: dark chocolate, spices
Mouth: tight, acidic, tannic, chocolate and pepper, perhaps some dark fruit, a little acrid on the finish.
Though I'm more of a lover of American Zinfandel I found this a very, very pleasant drop.

  • 2004 Massimo Romeo Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Nose: very oddly baked beans! tomato, toast and butter. After fairly vigorous excitation it exhibits some cherry and v.subtle chocolate
Mouth: dry, dusty, some tannin, acidity, savoury. Not much fruit. Nah.

  • 2004 Paolo Scavino Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose: rich, sour plum. leather, alcohol heat, tar. phew
Mouth: Tannin: like sucking a tea pickers leather sack...for a very long time...huge tannin and some acidity and tannin. Come back in ten years minimum...

Closing

Ones that worked for me were the Prosecco as a cheap and cheerful fizz, the Verdicchio, for it's complexity and the Barbera for the sheer pleasure of drinking it.
