Introduction

This was the third year that Pinot Days has been in chicago, and I've attended every one. It's always a lot of fun to try all sorts of different producers, and almost always the producers bring great wine.

Flight 1 - Merry Edwards, Olson Ogden, and Ketcham (5 Notes)

  • 2007 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

nose: nice dark and tart nose of dark red fruits, spices, raspberries, and some bits of cola

taste: tasty medium feel with well balanced tones of dark red fruits, dark cherries, spices and some bits of raspberries. Good medium acidity accompanies this

overall: a real nice pinot. Tart and fairly ready to drink right now. Has good fruit to it and a real good feel

  • 2007 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Meredith Estate 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

nose: dark and concentrated nose with some rich tones of black cherries, dark spices, dark berries and anisette

taste: fuller feel with good tannins and bigger tones of anisette, dark berries, black cherries and bits of dark currants. The feel is big and a bit rough around the edges with medium acidity

overall: in need of time. A bit brooding at this time and a big wine. Has a real interesting dark profile to it and seems to have the stuffing to shed some of its baby fat

  • 2007 Olson Ogden Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

nose: bold and rich nose of dark red fruits, anise, spice tones and juicy tones of dark cherries. A bigger nose for sure with solid depth

taste: rich and fuller bodied with big tones of blackberries, dark red fruits, spice tones, and loads of dark cherries. Some solid tannins to this as well, but is a bit chunky

overall: Could use a bit of time to smooth out, but this will never be a wallflower of a pinot. Big and rich, this has a jammy quality to it, but isn't overdone

  • 2007 Olson Ogden Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

nose: big, bold, and jammy nose of dark red fruits, blackberries, rich cola tones, spices and some bits of dark berries

taste: full bodied with rich and jammy tones of dark red fruits, blackberry liqueur, and spice tones with some noticeable heat on the back end

overall: Like the sonoma coast, this is not a shy pinot. The heat is a bit bothersome and the wine is bordering over the top and isn't sure which way it wants to go

taste: excellent medium feel with good acidity and tasty tones of raspberries, red berries, and creamy tones of red fruits. Well balanced, but seems like its holding back

overall: will need a bit of time to come together, but there looks to be a real nice wine underneath. There is a touch of heat on the palate, but it isn't too much right now

taste: real lovely medium feel with medium/high acidity and tones of dark red cherries, dark berries, earth tones and some bits of spices

nose: mineral and earth based along with tones of dark red cherries and brown spices. Classy with nice depth

taste: well balanced medium feel with noticeable medium/high acidity with bits of berries, minerals, dark red cherries and some earth tones

overall: a very nice pinot. It still has the more earthy characteristics of the vintage, but also has more tart fruit as well. This could really develop with some aging as it feels like it needs to round out more

Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue

  • 2007 Le Cadeau Pinot Noir Côte Est 88 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

nose: nice nose of plums, dark red cherries, berries, earth and some stemmy tones. A bit green on the nose and doesn't really blow off

taste: has added a bit more weight and rounded out with a nice medium feel and tones of earth, plums, dark red cherries and some stemmy tones

overall: I doubt that this will get much better. Its a nice pinot, but the acidity isn't all that big. The stemmy tones do present themselves and sit underneath right now
