  • 1996 Duval-Leroy Champagne Grand Cru Femme de Champagne 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Yet another excellent 500ml bottle. Again, beautiful, expressive nose, but slightly shyer on the palate. Lovely, fine, persistent bead. Bouquet showed white meat, mushrooms, earth, herbs - all very secondary and savoury - along with fresh white fruit. The palate was still primarily marked with fresh acid and lemony fizz. Again though, the great balance and concentration of the wine was obvious, along with a nicely structured backbone and a touch of ripe fruit moving into the lemony finish. An excellent bottle, and one worth cellaring for future consumption. This certainly has its best years still a long way ahead of it.

  • 2004 Freeman Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 89 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Simple, but very yummy. A little hot and alcoholic at first, but a couple of hours in the decanter did this wine a world of good. Cleary new world Pinot on the nose, but very pleasant, with mushrooms, sweet orange peel and ripe, dark cherries and a little touch of earth. Sweet again on the palate, but more from glycerol and ripe fruit, rather than being candied or artificial tasting. Very yummy actually, with ripe red-currants, berries and cherries held in pretty good balance with some fresh acidity running through the mid-palate into the fruit laden finish, that also showed bits of orange peel and haw flakes and just that touch of spice. Not the most complex of wines, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Great pairing with duck confit and duck-fat fries.
