DAWGS March 2010 - Alsace and Alsace Varietals

The DAWGS held the monthly tasting at the WineWaves home in McKinney, TX. The original plan was to enjoy some lovely white wines from Alsace on the patio on the first beautiful Spring evening in North Texas. Unfortunately Mother Nature cruelly thwarted our efforts with 32 degree temps, high winds and face numbing snow. No matter. We enjoyed each others company in the comfort of the WineWaves lovely home.

This evening was one of those rare occassions when I decide I would not take a single written note, opting instead to thoroughly enjoy the company of all of my friends. So all of my notes are from memory for this event. I missed a few wines so hopefully others can chime in and fill in the gaps.

• NV P. Lancelot-Royer Champagne Cuvée de Reserve R. R. Blanc de Blancs Brut 91 Points

  France, Champagne

  WIML91? Tasted at an offline. No notes take so general impressions from memory only. Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout with fine and steady beading. Nose of mixed yellow fruits with a dash of ginger. Flavors of yellow pears and apples a little dough note on he medium finish. Good acidity and body. I bought all of these in January 2008 from the same source at the same time and will drink the rest over the next year or so. Good wine.

• 2005 Zind-Humbrecht Muscat Goldert 90 Points

  France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

  WIML90-91? Tasted at an offline. No notes take so general impressions from memory only. Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nice nose of florals and a mix of yellow fruits that carried through to the palate. Good acidity and body. Drink over the next 3-4 years.

• 2006 Zind-Humbrecht Muscat Goldert 87 Points

  WIML87? Tasted at an offline. No notes take so general impressions from memory only. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Funky nose that was a cross between cigarette ash and a baby diaper. Light yellow pear and ash flavors on the palate. Acidity was OK, body on the light side. I relaly don't think the bottle was off, just not that good. Drink now.

• 2005 Dirler-Cade Pinot Noir Blanc 91 Points

  WIML91? Tasted at an offline. No notes taken so general impressions from memory only. Quite the interesting wine. When is the last time you had a white Pinot Noir? Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of white and yellow fruits that carries through to the palate. Perhaps a base of minerals underneath. Good acidity, body leans just a touch towards the lighter side with a slightly clipped finish. Drink over the short term?

• 2002 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl 91 Points

  WIML91? Tasted at an offline. No notes taken so general impressions from memory only. This bottle was a step behind previous bottles I've tasted. Yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of flowers, wet grass and sea foam. Flavors of yellow apples, lychee and a bit of waxy pears. Good acidity and body. Drink or hold.

  WIML8? Tasted at an offline. No notes taken so general impressions from memory only. Light garnet to raspberry looking color in the glass, slightly dusty looking. Nose and palate were both light and fairly singular along the lines of red raspberries. Light to medium acidity and body. Drink now.

  WIML92? Tasted at an offline. No notes taken so general impressions from memory only. Consistent with the previous bottle which I find remarkable to begin with. Here's my previous note that bears repeating (although I don't recall any barnyard on this bottle):
  
  Tasted at an offline. Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear hue. Nose starts with a hint of barnyard giving way to notes of black berries, black cherries and a hint of rose petals. Flavors of black berries and black cherries. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink or hold.

• 2008 Loring Wine Company Pinot Noir Central Coast 90 Points

  WIML89-90? Tasted at an offline. No notes taken so general impressions from memory only. Garnet to dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nice nose of black berries and cherries that carry through to the palate. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Drink over the short term. Pretty nice little QPR here and recommended on that basis as a daily drink Pinot.
