Mature looking with tawny edge. Gorgeous nose with perfumed stone, earth, and red fruit. Medium weight, crisp acidity, and moderate finish. Definitely the pleasant surprise of the night, although this seemed to attenuate over time, suggesting that it is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Medium ruby. Stalky, green nose that picks up some fruit. Dilute and diffuse without either clear fruit or defining acidity. Forgettable and a poor example of 1997.

Dark and primary looking. Piercing licorice and sweaty. This is a beast, by far the densest wine of the tasting. Ripe with some VA, slow to unfold, and tannic. The acidity shows up at the end. Too young now but great promise.

Medium ruby without fading. Cool, green aromatics. Perfect weight, subtle ripe fruit, long finish. Lovely and just entering its prime drinking zone. Kept on improving.

Also youthful color. Stylistically, very similar to the '96, but this is leaner still with less heft. Tannic and still has a long way to go, but very enjoyable tonight.

Fully mature, resolved color. It shared its red fruit profile with the '98, and a touch of caramel too. Medium body, natural sweetness, binding acidity, excellent length. Not as ethereal as the last bottle but still excellent.
2002 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Light golden. Honey, cream, and bright citrus. Full, oaky, rich with average acidity. Not particularly mineral but alive and delicious.
