Averys, Bristol
Tasted Saturday, March 27, 2010 by Benj with 464 views
Averys laid out a bunch of wines for us to taste for free this weekend. All prices given in these notes are full RRP - they were offering 10-25% discount on all of these on the day so some were very good value indeed.
2007 Nicolas Potel Saint-Romain Vieilles Vignes 88 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Romain
Rich, weighty, light oaking, butterscotch on the finish, well-balanced. Excellent, could do with a bit more complexity. £16.99

2006 Clarendelle Blanc 86 Points
France, Bordeaux
Semillon really coming through. Nutty, slightly waxy nose with lemon peel & a touch of drumstick sweets. Palate echoes nose, but balance of thick, oily with sharp, acidic is slightly off-kilter. V good though. £13.99

2009 Casa Silva Sauvignon Blanc Cool Coast Paredones Estate 91 Points
Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
Nose dominated by grass & green bell pepper, some minerality & tiny amounts of fruit. Palate is very focused, great acidity and crisp crunchy fruit & melon join the veggies. This is pretty fantastic, tons of flavour, one of the best Sauvignon Blancs I've had. £12.99

2008 Villa Wolf Gewürztraminer 87 Points
Germany, Pfalz
Smells like warm, potent, natural roses, not fake perfume-like at all. Some citric freshness, too. Off-dry, enough acidity to stop it being flabby, though I had fears at a couple points. Good attack & mid-palate, persistent finish ~20 seconds, v. good example of off-dry Gewurz. Rated this 89 before moderating it to correct for my love of all things Gewurz. £9.99, worth trying.

2009 Casa del Valle Sauvignon Blanc Classic 78 Points
Chile, Aconcagua Valley
Uninteresting, alcohol off balance on the palate, little flavour to go with the acidity. Dull, avoid. £6.99

2007 Clarendelle Bordeaux Rosé 65 Points
France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Rosé
Wow, nasty, alcoholic, flavourless. Nothing about this seems obviously faulty...here's hoping it is. £10.99.

2008 La Bodega del Tesoro Jumilla Monastrell-Shiraz 86 Points
Spain, Murcia, Jumilla
A little over-oaked, particularly in the finish, which is a little sickly. Some good dark fruit thought, and certainly flavourful. Lots of tannin, fair amount of acid, needs a few years to settle.

2006 Medeiros Vinho Regional Alentejano 89 Points
Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano
Blend of Aragonez, Syrah, Touriga Nacional & Cabernet Sauvignon. Npse: meaty, oaky, sweet dark fruit. Palate: yep, this is good, can't feel the 14% alcohol. Not in-your-face, nicely balanced. Woody spices, juicy fruit, good balanced oaking, nutty finish. Lots of med-fine mouthcoating tannins. Probably to iget better before it gets worse. £8.49, good buy for a taste of Portugal outside the Douro.

2007 Dominique Piron Fleurie 75 Points
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
Maybe I just don't like Gamay as a grape, maybe I just don't like the style of the majority of (even the cru) Beaujolais. Nose of smoked strawberries. Otherwise, just...so boring. Not even light and fruity and refreshing, as if it's trying to be "serious" but just ends up insipid. £14.99? Really?

2000 Bodegas Muriel Rioja El Somo Reserva 88 Points
Spain, La Rioja, Rioja
Nose of smoke, plums and molasses. Same on the palate, very juicy, a little meaty. Kind of oxidised but rather good. £14.99

2003 Bodegas Sierra Salinas Alicante Mira 89 Points
Spain, Valencia, Alicante
Very Spanish. Rich fruit and oak nose, very nice but nothing particularly distintive. A bit of a bomb on the palate, big acid, big oak, medium tannin, very juicy, seductive, but a touch over the top for me. Should hit the 90+ mark for those who like this style. £23.99

NV Cantine Sacchetto Prosecco Di Paolo Frizzante 87 Points
Italy, Veneto / Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Prosecco
Prosecco done properly. Light, fruity, very tasty, no awkwardness at all, just summer bliss in a glass. £8.49
