  • 2004 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tasted blind – Medium yellow in colour. On the nose smoky with lemon and citrus. Some yeasty notes on the palate. Rich and round in the mouth. Medium acid and body. Lots of tasty oak on the finish. A voluptuous wine with nice complexity. This is ready to go. Excellent.

  • 2004 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tasted blind – Lighter in colour than the first wine; light yellow. Big nose that gained strength as it sat in the glass. At first gave buttery notes with smoky oak then after some time started showing some lime and minerality. On the palate more citrus and steel. Higher in acid than the first wine. This wine appeared, tasted and smelt much younger than the first wine. This is enjoyable now but will benefit from a few more years. Excellent. 91+

With scallop raviolis, warm lobster tomato salad, truffle essence...

  • 2000 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Tasted blind – Light to medium colour, somewhere in between the first two whites. Wow, this has an amazing nose. Nutty, salty, charred citrus and stone fruits. Tart and crisp on the palate with a ton of acid. This is great now, but I think will be even better in a few years. Excellent. 91+

  • 1978 Remoissenet Père et Fils Pommard 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

Mature medium red in colour with some nice bricking. Nice mature nose giving funk, blood, mushrooms, vegetal, and baked raspberry/rhubarb. After a few minutes in the glass some leather and tobacco but notes of iron became quite dominant. Resolved tannins with subtle acidity and light to medium body. I preferred my last bottle slightly more than this one, although this one seemed to hold up much better over the course of the night. Excellent.

  • 1990 Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

Brightest coloured red yet. Beautiful nose. Good amount of funk and mature red fruits. Nice soft red fruits flavours with a smooth texture on the entry. But then there was this pickled/dill acidic thing going on that I didn’t enjoy. This bottle has a great nose but is somewhat disjointed on the palate. Definitely not the worth price, and frankly disappointing considering the vintage and the vineyard. The extremely enjoyable nose is keeping this wine from being scored even lower. Very good.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

With roasted pheasant, poached eggs meurettes, wild mushrooms, Burgundy reduction...

  • 1996 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vignes Rondes 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru

Tasted blind – Darkest and youngest looking red wine yet. I’m enjoying this nose a lot. Iron with rhubarb and bright red fruits. Balanced on the palate although a little tart and dry on the finish. As it sat in the glass it became more tart and the nose starting giving a celery note that wasn’t off-putting, but wasn’t exactly enjoyable. This was much better right out of the gate with a beautiful nose and balanced palate but worsened with time. Good.

  • 1985 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted blind – Red colour at the core with a browning hue throughout. Great mature nose with sweeter red fruits and leather. The palate was giving more sweet red fruits and maple notes with hints of leather and tobacco. Soft and smooth mouth feel and well balanced. Resolved tannins and a nice amount of acid keeping the sweeter fruit profile in check. This is fantastic mature Burgundy. Drinking very well right now. My WOTN. Excellent.

  • 1989 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Tasted blind – brighter red colour than the previous wine. Musky nose at first but blew off after a few minutes giving smoke, strawberry, rhubarb and later on, celery notes. Sweeter red fruits on the palate. Soft and graceful in the mouth. Well balanced. Drinking very well now. Excellent.

With triple cream brie, truffles...

  • 2001 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Tasted blind – Medium red in colour, one of the brighter reds so far tonight. Very dirty nose with lots of manure (the good kind), barnyard and red fruits. Showing more maturity on the nose than in the mouth. The most masculine and tannic wine yet. I find the nose more enjoyable than the palate this stage. I’d hold off for a few more years. Very good. 88+

  • 1958 M. Doudet-Naudin Savigny-lès-Beaune

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune

Tasted blind – What great colour. Looks like a very mature Nebbiolo with a light amber and orange colour with just hints of light red at the core. On the nose, Nebbiolo-like again with rose water, candied tangerine peel and a sweet lifted red fruit note. On the palate, the fruit is barely holding on. Resolved tannins with a ton of acid. This must be in the 70s; maybe even the 60s...wrong...50s! What a beautiful mature burgundy...and the oldest wine to date I’ve ever tasted. It has the lost the battle of balance, with little fruit left and all that acid, but it still manages to be an amazing wine and extremely enjoyable. A fun and thought provoking experience. This was a generous gift from our host whose birth year is 1958.
