Introduction

Ulla brought the wines, I tasted double blind.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Tsantali Xinomavro Naousa Reserve 87 Points

    Greece, Macedonia, Naoussa

    Tasted double blind, decanted for an hour. A very dark purpley red. The nose is quite floral with nice blackberry and a bit of a citrusy side whiff. On the palate there were some tannins, a bit of acidity and pleasant dark fruits. This was a very pleasant wine, enjoyable in many ways. 50+4+10+15+8=87

  • 2001 Marqués de Arienzo Rioja Gran Reserva 86 Points

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

    Tasted double blind, decanted for an hour. A fairly light red to the rim, no violet in evidence. The first thing that hit the nose was oak, toasted oak. I guessed immediately Rioja, so I thought ok, get past the oak and see what this is about. The oak does really dominate the nose, the only other aromas coming through was a kind of dustiness. The palate is also dominated by oak, but with licorice and some red fruits coming through. Some tannins, but otherwise this was a soft and round wine, an easy drinker if you don't mind the oak. 50+5+9+14+8=86

Closing

Two very nice wines , I liked the Greek wine more. It somehow reminded me of a CdR. The Rioja was ok, but I wouldn't buy it myself. Nice to have these double blind tastings, if anything it reinforces opinions without prejudice.
