Flight 1 - Whites: (4 Notes)

  • 2005 Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Noirs Brut 90 Points

    USA, California, North Coast

    Tasted blind – medium straw in colour. On the nose yeasty notes with loads of green apple and doughy notes on the palate. Crisp mouth feel with a good amount of acidity. Nice tartness. As it sat in the glass it seemed to gain complexity. Long finish, medium body and very dry. I liked this a lot and would have guessed Champagne for sure. Drink or hold. Excellent.

  • 2004 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Viognier de Rosine 85 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Collines Rhodaniennes

    Tasted blind – medium to dark yellow in colour. Strong oxidative and funky notes on the nose with honey, cheese and hints of floral that had some of us guessing Viognier. Soft yet weighty on the palate. Flavours not nearly as pronounced as the nose. This is my first experience with an older Viognier, and while it’s clearly a well made wine and others seemed to enjoy it, it wasn’t my cup of tea. Nose was more enjoyable than the palate. Drink now. Good.

  • 2004 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Tasted blind – light yellow in colour. Fresh nose yeast and citrus notes on the nose that seems almost spritzy at first. Quite a bit of oak coming through on the finish. Medium body and acid. Drank side by side with the Latour-Giraud of the same vintage and vineyard. Drink or hold. Very good.

  • 2004 Domaine Latour-Giraud Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Tasted blind – slightly darker than the Bouchard in colour. Toasty and nutty nose. Crisper on the palate with high acidity and fresher flavours. This was showing more Chardonnay typicity than the Bouchard. This wine has the fresher palate, whereas the Bouchard had the fresher nose. I really liked this. Excellent.

Flight 2 - Reds: (6 Notes)

  • 2000 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici 90 Points

    Italy, Campania, Taurasi DOCG

    Tasted blind – dark red at the core moving to a medium red/brick towards the rim. Great nose of black currants and plums with hints of mint. Nose had me guessing this was a cab sauv. Medium body with solid tannins and acidity. Good mouth feel. Drinking well now but no rush. Excellent.

  • 1998 Domaine Brusset Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

    Tasted blind – dark to medium red showing some age at the rim. Notes of black cherries, some spice and hints of dirtiness. Decent amount of structure left with medium tannins and higher acid. Nose reminded me of Bordeaux yet the palate was giving me lots of tell-tale Syrah notes. Soft and silky in the mouth. Needs time. Excellent. 90+

  • 1990 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Opened 4 hours before serving. Nice brownish hue colour with some red/orange at the core. Great nose of sweeter red fruits with lots of meaty and vegetal notes as well. Soft on the palate and well balanced. Medium body and acid with some tannins still hanging around. This is in a good spot and drinking very nicely but no rush. Excellent.

  • 1999 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Tasted blind – at first a few us detected very slight amounts of TCA but most at the table couldn’t detect it and declared it was a muskiness that blew off after a minutes. Still a nice nose of eucalyptus, black fruits and cedar. Lots of structure left in this one. Not as refined as the '90 Pegau but that may change with a few more years. Excellent. 90+

  • 1997 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

    Tasted blind – wow, big nose full of bell pepper, dill, ashtray and bright red fruits. Had me thinking cab franc but when Bordeaux was eliminated after someone’s incorrect guess, I went straight to Cornas. I love the noses on these Clape wines. Medium to full body with good amounts of tannin and acid left. This wasn’t as rustic as the ‘96 I tried a few months ago, but was softer in the mouth and clearly more fruit forward. More refined than its older sibling and drinking very well. Overall I prefer the ’96, but this isn't far behind. Excellent.

  • 1990 Penfolds Bin 389 89 Points

    Australia, South Australia

    Tasted blind – darkest wine yet. Jammy nose with tons of vanilla and sweet red and black fruits making it quite obvious where this was from. The concentration of sweet fruit is still very apparent even at 20 years of age, which no one guessed. On the palate sweet black fruits with a solid tannins and acidity. Full bodied. Who says Aussie wines can’t age? Drinking well but no rush. Very good.

Flight 3 - With cheese: (2 Notes)

  • 1993 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spätlese 90 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

    Opened and served right away (note: when I grabbed this bottle there was some goo seeping out from under the capsule and when I removed it there was even more underneath). Medium gold colour. Pronounced nose of petrol, citrus (mainly lime) and hints of tropical fruits. Thick and weighty on the palate giving more citrus notes and some sweetness, but the flavours not as pronounced as on the nose. Pretty well balanced. This definitely showed much more age on the nose than the palate. Medium acidity and medium to full body. Finished seemed to fade a little quicker than id like. My last few bottles seemed to be slightly fuller and more flavourful on the palate, but this was still very nice. Drink now. Excellent.

  • 1991 Quinta do Vesuvio Porto Vintage 90 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

    Tasted blind – dark red/purple in colour. Concentrated notes of reduced black fruits, black currants and black liquorice. Some heat coming through on the palate. Needs time. Excellent. 90+
