Peay pickup tasting, April 2010

Introduction
The spring Peay pickup party was another great opportunity to try most of the latest wines, as well as a few library bottles. Though it was a bit cool, the sun came out and the rain held off, making it a nice day for the drive up to the winery. Peay is one of my favorite producers, and the wines today most definitely measured up to my high expectations. For those looking for wines of interest and complexity, made in a more reserved, elegant, California style, you should definitely give these a try.
2008 Peay Vineyards Chardonnay Estate 92 Points

Rich, crisp, great acidity, a really lovely California Chardonnay. A bit young at this point, should improve with a year or two of age.

Deep, voluptuous chardonnay, showing peach and some red apple, nice acidity, terrific Cali Chard.

2008 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir Estate 92 Points

Medium body, beautiful deep strawberry/raspberry flavors, some nice round richness, nice overall structure and a good finish. A little more straightforward than the Pomarium and Scallop Shelf, but still a very fine wine, maybe one to drink a bit earlier.

Beautiful strawberry, raspberry, light cherry flavors, great complexity, light medium body, some interesting herbs and spice. Gorgeous wine, very feminine, elegant, give it some time.

Fabulous raspberry/strawberry/cherry, beautiful complexities starting to evolve, some spice, great balance. This is the first time I've felt this wine is starting to come out of its shell. I bet this will continue to develop for another couple of years, then be at it's peak for quite a few more.

2007 Peay Vineyards Syrah La Bruma 93 Points

This is a bit rounder and fleshier than the Les Titans, nice depth of darker flavors, medium acidity, a fantastic syrah.

2007 Peay Vineyards Syrah Les Titans 95 Points

Gorgeous deep violet fruit, very focused, with laser acidity. I keep coming back to this one, it seems to weave this narrow path through a series of fabulous flavors and palate sensations. La Bruma and Les Titans have flip flipped this year, with the Bruma being the bigger, rounder, fleshier wine, and Titans having the tighter focus. Interesting how these two bottlings do that from vintage to vintage, just when you think you have them pegged, they do the Parent Trap thing on you.
