2008 Villa Bibbiani Chianti Poggio Vignoso 87 Points

Nice entry level Chianti. A bit ripe overall. Cherries and wildberries with spice on the nose with violets. Fruit driven palate with more spice, subtle though, with berries, juicy tannins, and soft finish. Good pizza wine.

2007 Azienda Agricola Perazzeta Sangiovese Sara Toscana IGT 88 Points

A bit more complex than the Chianti tried prior. Almost brambly nose with ripe raspberry bush, strawberries, a slight herbaceous quality. Firm dusty tannins up front with dried berries, juicy acidity and an herbal finish. Great value.

Not my favorite. Scorched earth, dried herbs and stewed fruits on nose. Strong tobacco notes once in the mouth, firm tannins, and low fruit content. Finishes with heat. Old?

Great wine, way underpriced. Explosive nose with plenty of rich ripe black cherry, tobacco, spice, plum, and slight smoke. Soft and velvety in the mouth with refined tannins, balanced acidity, and has an elegant approach with rich fruit. Soft spice on the finish.

The nose on this bottle was mute. The Sangiovese comes through after a bit with dried herbs and cherry, spice. The tannic structure shines through on the palate first then some dried red cherry, cranberry, and more herbs and spice. Medium bodied with medium intensity. Wish the nose would come through but was weak.

Interesting approach to a "super-Italian"! Kirsch, ripe razz liqueur on nose. Almost zin-like fruit driven nose, slightly jammy. The palate is firm with tannins and intense fruit up front. Plum and black razz. Acidity is nice but could use a dollop more. Fun, rather simple in ways, value driven.

I did enjoy this wine, though being on the upper tier of this portfolio. Very jammy black fruits on nose, dense cassis and black cherry, berry. Unique floral note at one point. The palate has some gripping tannins on back palate with dense black fruits up front, spice, slight toast. Almost an Italian meets California type of wine. I guess given the varietals it is true to the style, just done in a balanced fashion.

I've had this a few times in past and still own quite a few, but this was tasted during a seminar. Textbook nose of dried flowers, tobacco, earth, and truffles with dried cherries. The palate is still firm with dusty tannins, fruit tannin, herbs, and ripe cranberry, dried cherry, floral note. Great acidity throughout with a medium + body, great balance. Will age beautifully 10 years +.

Wonderfully perfumed and balanced. Ripe and intense with fruit, but integrates high acidity with the sweetness level that isn't anywhere near cloying. Refreshing ripe red apple, apricot, peach, and white concord grape juice. Has a respectable elegance to it.

Interesting blend and definitely interesting wine. The nose has a fennel seed, grassy, herbal note that is dominant. Nice minerality right away with lemon zest, grass, and green apple peel. Reminds me of some good examples of Sancerre. Good wine really and fun to try a blend like this.

2008 Azienda Agraria Le Rote Chianti Colli Senesi 91 Points

1st experience with a Chianti from Senesi. This wine is on fire! Add the fact that this is Chianti, then add the fact that it is sub $20!!! Sweet and spicy nose with ripe red cherry and plum. Slight caramelized tomato paste and herbs. The palate is lush and velvety with a spicy approach, rich mouthfeel and tons of red fruit. Tannins are elegant and refined and balanced with the rich fruit and medium+ acidity. This might be one of the better Chianti's I've encountered. While not necessarily age worthy, this shows great right now drinkability.

While not necessarily offensive or anything, this showed some simplicity. The aromatics were very nice with plenty of fruit, although it did end up having a touch of stewed fruit/tomato component. Firm tannins up front with the absence of balanced acid. Missing the mid palate as well. Probably needed to spend more time with this one, but it never showed through in the glass.

The '01 and '03 were fantastic and this shows equally as nice. Floral nose, dried cherries, tobacco, spice. Wild herbs, dried cranberry, earth, and mineral. The palate shows firm tannins throughout, high acid, and tons of spice. Unique Asian spice on the finish, the acidity and tannins are firm from front to back palate. Ageworthy for sure, yet with a healthy decant it is drinkable now.
