Introduction

A selection of wines from top independent producers - a rare Saint-Péray Mousseux, white and red Crozes-Hermitage from Graillot, Condrieu from Vernay, Saint-Joseph from Chave, Cornas from Clape, Côte Rôtie from Jasmin and Hermitage from Pascal Frères.

  • NV Jean Louís Thíers Saint-Péray Sparkling 80 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Péray

    Very fine bubbles. Lemon yellow with a touch of green. Clear & Bright. Sweetness on the nose, milky, yeasty and a touch of lime. Fine mousse with the sam e touch of sweetness but crisp and dry. Good acidity. green apples, lime with a bitter finish.

  • 2008 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Blanc 75 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

    Deep gold colour, clear and bright. Nose reminiscent of herbal tea and white flower. Good acidity, crisp, clean. Citrus - ripe lemons on palate. Long.

  • 2008 Domaine Georges Vernay Condrieu Les Terrasses de l'Empire 85 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

    Pale yellow. Clear & Bright. White pepper, unripe pears on the nose. Others had flowers and hedgerow notes. Good acidity, creamy texture. Some citrus some stone fruit - perhaps apricot.

  • 2006 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Les Jalets 80 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

    Intense, garnet, with a slightly thinning edge. Blackberry notes on the nose but rather simple with a lack of spice for my taste. Perhaps a touch of blood. Good acidity, bright ripe berry fruit. Fruit quite sweet.

  • 2006 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Saint-Joseph 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Saint-Joseph

    Very intense. Blue/Red in colour. Great nose with cloves, pepper, spice, blackberry fruit and blood. Rich and ripe on the palate with firm but smooth tannins, good acidity. Long, smooth with great black fruit.

  • 2006 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance 80 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

    Purple blue in colour. Very intense. Solid all the way to the rim. Nose dominated by a violet note and secondary notes - like an old lady's house. Touch of mothball even. Big tannic mouth feel but again these were ripe. Robust. Black fruit with some sweetness and a touch of spice. Needs a good few years before this one is ready.

  • 2004 Yves Chéron / Pascal Frères Hermitage 87 Points

    Slight orange hue at the edge. Medium intense (age starting to show in the body). Mature fragrance with great blackberry pepper combo - spicy finish with a hint of vanilla. Rich with good acidity. Big start with smooth dark fruit coming through later on the palate. Medium length (a little too short for some in the room). Bitter end. At its peak - drinking great now but wont improve.

  • 2002 Clusel-Roch Côte-Rôtie Classique 82 Points

    Slight colour change at the rim, losing intensity. Great colour. Very sweet almost strawberry on the nose. Perfumed and peppery. Softest of the wines with good acidity, fruit and spice. Earthy. A light vintage (drinking better this young?).
