Introduction

Flight 1 - Sweet wines (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Chardonnay showdown (2 Notes)

Flight 3 - Does a 1990 Lafite pair well with a porterhouse steak? (3 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Three hour decant. Next to '95 Clerc Milon and '99 Peter Michael Les Pavols. Clear favorite of the reds. The nose firm but refined slight barnyard, lead, mature red fruit. Gorgeous tar, lead pencil, blueberry, and chocolate in the mouth with excellent balance of tannin and acidity. Super elegant. Much delight with the long-ish finish which seemed to roll gently from the front to the back then to the front of the mouth.

  • 1995 Château Clerc Milon 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Traditional, earthy pencil lead Pauillac nose though muted at this stage. Medium finish.

  • 1999 Peter Michael Les Pavots 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley

Nose on this almost made me mistake it for one of the Bordeaux with slight barnyard and dampness. Big wine in the mouth with plums, blackberry, currant, and toffee. Firm tannins and strong acidity were almost overpowering at this stage. Would be interested to revisit in 5 years.
