    Very rich, ripe dark fruited flavours with the oak quite noticeable and dominating the back end; seems quite reticent and unyielding right now with the tannic structure dominating and a little woody astringency on the finish.

  • 2006 Château Canon 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Much more enjoyable than the '05 right now; the oak's a lot more subtle and woven nicely into the background with faint toasty and smoky accents around the deep black cherry and currant flavours. There's a nice sense of freshness to this with pleasant acidity and the tannins quite grainy and lurking in the background.

  • 1998 Château Canon 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Funky aromatics that make this smell a little Rhone-ish with a fair bit of iodine, leather and faintly meaty elements over red fruits and cassis. There's a bit of volatile acidity that comes out with some swirling, giving the fruit a high-toned sensation but in this case it doesn't detract. Very enjoyable.

    Pretty much a complete package; a combination of red and dark fruited flavours that still feel incredibly youthful with developed leather, cedar and faintly herbal notes on a middleweight frame. The tannins are barely noticeable, almost resolved giving this a very elegant, silken texture. Wonderful stuff that for me was right up there with the '82.

  • 1985 Château Canon 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Starts out a little funky and leathery with a core of fresh red and dark fruits, earth and herbs, with time the fruit gains in weight and depth and the aromatics expand, taking on an almost cookie dough-like sweetness on top of the brightly fruited core. Really nicely balanced and elegant, drinking beautifully now.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Like the '89, this is the complete package (though a little deeper and richer in its flavour profile than the '89) - stunning aromatics combining cassis and red fruits with tobacco, cedar, earth and herbal elements, power with grace in the mouth and fantastic length and presence. Great wine.

    Very enjoyable though not one for fruit-hounds; lovely old-Bordeaux aromatics full of leather, dusty earth, cedar and dried herbs with hints of red fruits; middleweight and elegant in the mouth with gentle developed flavours and fairly grainy tannins still lurking on the back end.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    A first bottle was quite oxidative with sherried and soy flavours; a second was absolutely stunning. Surprisingly youthful with a deep red colour, bold red and dark fruited flavours mingling seamlessly with baking spices, cedar, smoky and leathery accents, firm and powerful but still very graceful and elegant with gentle tannins and bright acids; proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove here. Fantastic balance and length, a wow wine.

    A little tired, perhaps just past its best? - dried red fruits, cedar, tobacco and dusty earth on a light, somewhat frail frame. Still some fruit and developed flavours of interest here, but this is one to be drunk up.

  • 1952 Château Canon 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Staggering stuff. Such an incredible, expansive aromatic profile combining all sorts of sweet and savoury elements with a spectrum of flavour ranging from cinnamon and cookie dough-like scents to ferric, rusty mineral notes in addition to the red fruited/tobacco/cedary flavour profile of classic older Bordeaux. The fruit here is still quite youthful and vibrant with a spine of bright acids keeping it fresh and precise, and the seamlessness and elegance in the mouth is hard to describe adequately - but despite its richness and power, this seems to literally float in the mouth with an incredible finesse and lightness of touch. Flat out stunning wine.

    Awesome again. A powerhouse of a Spätlese; explosive in its fruit and mineral intensity with bright floral/ginger/other spicy aromatic accents and fantastic acidity keeping it really balanced and precise.

  • 2001 Darting Dürkheimer Nonnengarten Rieslaner Auslese 91 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

    Bargain Beerenauslese (at least) here, loaded with heavy botrytised flavours of honey, apricot and pineapple with some spring onion and wild herbal/spicy notes underneath. Very rich and intense in the mouth, but this has the '01 acidity keeping it really well balanced despite its size and sweetness. Very fun wine, thanks Dale - had wanted to try a Darting Rieslaner for quite a while.
