Introduction

A small gathering to meet visiting 'ebober' Barbara, over from Rome for a few days before a trip to NZ!
A great evening of fine wine and even better company. Brief notes:

Flight 1 - Bubbles / White Burg (3 Notes)

Flight 2 - Bordeaux (5 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Magdelaine 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Much deeper, black/ruby than the 1997, a more tannic core, darker fruits and licorice. Good but I am not sure how much this has to come.

  • 1999 Château La Fleur-Pétrus 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Riper fruit than the two Magdelaine, more solid depth, plump dried fruit, drinking v well now, perhaps not enough acidity for the long term but great fun now.

  • 1985 Château La Dominique 90 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Fully mature (slightly over the hill), showing some sweet dried fruit and bay, a little hollow, drinking up but very enjoyable.

  • 2001 Château Pavie 94 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Strong, intense but balanced, massive but restrained, This was a chance to see what the fuss is about, and for all of us I think it was the first time with a post-1998 Pavie. Inky concentrated black fruit, I would prefer some more savory notes, very good, but I couldn't drink a bottle.

  • 1986 Château Léoville Las Cases 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Brooding dark purple colour, smokey ripe blackcurrent, massive depth but great balance, still quite tight, tannins are in check though. It shows a little like better bottles of Guraud Larose '86 tried recently, but a more amplified, balanced wine. Great, but slightest TCA lurking at back
