Introduction

We were once again invited to fill-in at the Friday group's monthly tasting. The wines were served in a single flight. Tasters ranked the wines and the votes were tallied, one point for a 1st place ranking, two for a 2nd place, and so on.

This was one of the most difficult tastings I have attended. The wines were all obviously young & primary, and there wasn't much that made one stand out over another, as evidenced by my scores. These were all excellent. The wines showed nice levels of acidity, and I would be happy to have any of these in my cellar.

  • 1990 Domaine Trapet Chambertin 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

    Pale ruby color. Strawberry and leather notes turn to sour tart cherry tones. Opens in the glass though, displaying floral, earth and black cherry aromas. Well-balanced, with cherry, iron, leather and earth flavors. Long finish, with earthy red fruit tones.

  • 2005 Riecine Chianti Classico 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG

    Aromas of red licorice, spice, lavender and garrigue. Rich dark fruit and berry tones on the palate. Well-balanced, with a nice, medium+ finish. Nice, but no one picked this out as Italian, let alone a Chianti. Even those that think Italian wines are too acidic or astringent will enjoy this one.

  • 2005 Château Quinault L'Enclos 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Dark color. Soft plum, dark fruit, earth and iron notes. Soft tannins and flavors of dakr fruit, blackberry, spice and herbs. Ends with a subtle earthy quality. Nice finish.
