2007 White Burgundy Brown Bagger

We were once again invited to fill-in at the Friday group's monthly tasting. The wines were served in a single flight. Tasters ranked the wines and the votes were tallied, one point for a 1st place ranking, two for a 2nd place, and so on.

This was one of the most difficult tastings I have attended. The wines were all obviously young & primary, and there wasn't much that made one stand out over another, as evidenced by my scores. These were all excellent. The wines showed nice levels of acidity, and I would be happy to have any of these in my cellar.

• 2004 Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes 92 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

  Medium straw color. Notes of mineral, flowers and apple with a nice smoky undertone. The palate follows the nose, with a subtle toast quality. Finishes well.

• 2004 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 93 Points

  France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

  Light to medium straw color. Notes of minerals, flowers and smoky toast, though subtle. Apple, mineral and stone falvors, with a toasty finish. Slightly deeper across the midpalate than the first wine. Long finish.

• 2007 Maison Sylvain Loichet Pernand-Vergelesses Belles Filles Blanc 92 Points

  Deep straw color. Aromas of clay, wax, raw almond. Orchard fruit notes more apparent with air. Rich texture, with good acidity and flavors of minerals and pear.

  Pale straw color. Aromas of flowers, minerals and crushed rock. Nice body with a good level of acidity. Flavors of apple, pear, wet stones and citrus.

  Medium straw color. Aromas of smoke, mineral, apple and almond. Palate follows the nose - awesome mineral/stone qualities. Terrific weight across the palate, ending with a long finish. Good lifting acidity.

  Deep straw color. Restrained; pear and wool tones initially, with apple and mineral nuances developing in the glass. A bit round, softer acidity than most here tonight. Apple and stone tones on the palate, with a nice apple- & mineral-driven finish. Came on strong, taking some time to open.

  Pale ruby color. Strawberry and leather notes turn to sour tart cherry tones. Opens in the glass though, displaying floral, earth and black cherry aromas. Well-balanced, with cherry, iron, leather and earth flavors. Long finish, with earthy red fruit tones.

  Aromas of red licorice, spice, lavender and garrigue. Rich dark fruit and berry tones on the palate. Well-balanced, with a nice, medium+ finish. Nice, but no one picked this out as Italian, let alone a Chianti. Even those that think Italian wines are too acidic or astringent will enjoy this one.

• 2005 Château Quinault L'Enclos 91 Points

  Dark color. Soft plum, dark fruit, earth and iron notes. Soft tannins and flavors of dakr fruit, blackberry, spice and herbs. Ends with a subtle earthy quality. Nice finish.
