Introduction
I had a wonderful time at Weygandt Wines in Cleveland Park with my D.C. buddies. All the wines were chosen from the store through a kind of collective determination of some of the most unique wines this place carries. Each wine was definitely unique! This is the kind of tasting I wish people who were just getting into wine could go to, because the range of styles, aromas, flavors, etc., was spectacular.
1998 Ployez-Jacquemart Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 91 Points
France, Champagne
this is my style of champagne for sure. flowers, lemon zest, almonds and slate on the nose. this is medium bodied with really spicy acidity that hits right away and stays on through the finish. i love the freshness, but also the depth of pineapple, lemon, custard and hazelnut flavors. i imagine this would improve with another ten years. i'd love to see those nutty, toasty flavors evolve.

2007 Domaine Servin Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux 84 Points

really golden color, surprisingly so. the nose has some pineapple, oil and a distinct musky note, almost like a mix of sweat, but sweat that someone tried to cover up with perfume. it's really plump on the palate, trending toward being flabby. lacking in acidity, minerality and really any fruit flavors besides a little bit of pineapple.

2008 Domaine Servin Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 93 Points

one of the best young chablis i've ever tasted for sure. light golden color. the nose is intoxicating with its freshness. it's so floral and lemony, and there's an undercurrent of lively sea air. but on the palate, the boldness of this wine really hits you. it's rich and round, fleshy, with pineapples, golden apples, honeycomb. the minerality on the finish leaves your palate feeling refreshed. this is a wine that really progresses from the nose to the palate to the finish. it's very existential in its approach. it will surely develop into a masterpiece with 10 years of age.

2007 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Ried Steinertal 95 Points

i felt lucky to taste this wine. it's so gorgeous! rich yellow color. litchi, incense, lavender and gummy bear candy on the nose. the richness on the palate is immediate and powerful. apricots, motor oil, sea salt and figs simultaneously assault and massage the palate. the midpalate is also full of honey. this beauty then finishes with white pepper and stony minerality. a wine that is so complex, yet so easy to drink at the same time, a full-blown riesling orgasm.

2007 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 'M' 96 Points

i've been told my 100-point rating scale tends to be conservative. i almost feel awkward rating a wine a 96. but there is no question about this gruvey. just sniff this wine, and feel everything else fade away. the nose is seriously therapeutic. people pay shrinks a lot more than this bottle costs, but this baby's almost transcendental. where to start with the nose? lemons, smoldering wood, apple, tobacco, bay leaf and a very distinct note of chicken bouillon cubes. no kidding. smell one, then smell this wine and tell me i'm crazy. this wine coats the palate and the acidity is razor sharp. the flavors are so complex. this is a wine to pour for people who claim whites cannot reach the pinnacles of reds as far as the compelxity of flavors. apricots and honey that are reminiscent of botrytis, almost a bit of motor oil, lots of bay leaf, tobacco. the finish is seamless and leaves you with pine needles and minerals. if this wine were a woman, the things i...

2007 Albert Mann Gewurztraminer Furstentum Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

what a lovely gewurz. flowers, guavas, spiced oranges, smoke and litchi on the nose. this nose is epic. honey, nail polish, creamy oranges, orange peel, grapefruit and honey on the palate. it's rich and lush, with a bit of sweetness on the honeyed apricot flavors. acid is medium. if this were a bit more fresh and lively, i'd go nuts over it. i really wanted it to be a 93 or 94-point wine. still a wonderful bottle though.

2003 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Rouge 90 Points

you know that girl in high school that had long black hair and kind of kept to herself? the one who had beautiful eyes and would probably have a gorgeous smile, but you never saw it? you wanted to ask her out, but you were a little bit scared that she might kind of be crazy? well, that's this wine. light ruby colored. spearmint, tobacco and smoke on the nose. really unique and intriguing, you almost don't want to taste it because you're afraid the palate might not live up to the chaotic nose. this baby is dry! lots of acid. the fruit is really below the surface, if there at all. the only real fruit component is sour cherry. (how is this from 2003? maybe the fruit has faded? but was the fruit ever there in the first place? who knows! that's why this wine is crazy!) tons of tobacco, musk, mossy rocks, veggies and the finish is loaded with pickles and garlic brine. i rated it 90. that's because i did ask that girl out, and she turned out to be, well, yes, crazy... but still a lot of fun.

2005 Domaine des Lambrays Morey-Saint-Denis 90 Points

dark purple colore. rich plums, black licorice and animal hide on the nose. spicy cherries, cherry wood, loam, cocoa powder on the palate. this has rich, fine tannins, it almost feels like sucking on a piece of construction paper. this had been opened for 12 hours, so i'd seriously recommend holding onto it. it was lovely, but way too tight. this baby needs time to mature. patience, friends, patience.

so bright in the glass! like magenta set on fire. lots of rasberries and cranberries, with lavender, and spices. lots of sweet cherry and rasberry fruit, backed by rich tannins and dusty, earthy notes. tight. this will age very well. glad the tasting crew got to taste this one, as i was a big champion of it. happy to see people liked it.

2001 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

rich ruby colored. lots of cherry liquer, kirsch royale, rasberries, smoke and grilled meat on the nose. the palate is dense, yet very elegant. seriously feels burgundian on the palate. its a sexier cdp, not a big, hard-hitting beast of a wine. flavors like grilled meat, coriander, plums and black pepper coat the palate. the finish is exquisite, with hints of funk and lamb hide. this is drinking well now, and considering that the fruit kind of takes a back seat, this might be one to consume in the short-term future.

what a way to finish off an incredible evening of mind-boggling wines. after being open all day, the nose on this one popped with olive tapenade, grilled meat and blackberry sauce. it's big and chewy, dense and the tannins practically tear your face off. very young, but showing tremendous potential. throw some beef jerky and some blood into a blender with the best farm-fresh blueberries and blackberries, and you might get somewhat of a clue of how damn tasty this wine is.
