CES Lab Wine Tasting #5

The idea behind the tasting is to present different wines from various regions of the world. Reasonably priced bottles that made it to the WS top 100 lists were included.

• 2008 Craggy Range Chardonnay Single Vineyard Kidnappers Vineyard 89 Points

  New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay

  Light and little oak. Lots of minerals - metallic. Good QPR. Not much complexity, but fun to drink.

• 2007 Brancaia Tre Toscana IGT 89 Points

  Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

  No much in concentration but really nice balance. High acidity. Clearly the wine needs food. Slightly green on the end.

• 2002 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) 90 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Julien

  Decanted for 4 hrs. Expected a bit more from wine. Barely beginning to show secondary characteristics. Felt just a tad closed or tight. It needed food to be enjoyable.

  This was the wine of the night for the tasting. Quite balanced. Not over extracted and not overly acid. Notes of blueberry on the palette

• 2002 Viña Santa Rita Cabernet Sauvignon Casa Real Flawed

  Chile, Maipo Valley

  Corked with a nasty nose. However, you could tell that the wine had some interesting qualities.

  Outstanding nose. Yet the wine is somewhat closed at the moment. Needs a bit more time.

• 2005 Monteviejo Malbec Lindaflor 90 Points

  Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco

  This is a pedal to the medal wine with 15.7 % alcohol. Everything seems to be excess: extraction, alcohol, fruit. Very dark color, almost black.

  Hungary, Tokaji

  Surprisingly tart (more tart than expected). Nice complexity: orange blossoms, tropical fruits, Asian spices, good length.

The favorite wines of the night were the COHO and the Royal Tokai
