STG does Southern Italy

Introduction

Jason Domanico hosted us at his winery for the restart/reunion of the self-proclaimed Seattle Tasting Group. A really fun night with a theme a bit outside of our traditional zone.

We started with some of Jason's wines.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

Then we moved to our first Italian flight. Ironically the first wine of the night was perhaps the best.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

This pair was lighter scaled.

  • 2006 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso Guardiola 85 Points

    Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC

    Sulphur. Cotes du Rhone ringer. Critics refer to Pinot. A bit too candied for me.

  • 2005 Capichera Assajé Isola dei Nuraghi IGT 90 Points

    Carignane. Saturated, easy, somewhat herbal at first. Mmm, this improves with time in the glass with tarry and licorice notes. Very suave, warm, and easygoing. Really nice texture. It improved the longer it sat in the glass. Perhaps a bit expensive for what it delivers, but this was quite alluring.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

We finished with some monster, 2x2001 Serpico, a 2003 Serpico, and the Arnaldo-Caprai that was really central more than southern Italy. It fit into the bruiser theme though.

  • 2001 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico 87 Points

    Italy, Campania, Irpinia

    We had two bottles of this. One had been double-decanted 12 hours earlier and had a very stewed nose. Apparently it crashed with aeration, as the person who brought said it seemed fresh when opened.

    The second bottle was quite different. A bit of a green/dill oak note on the nose. Wowza this is drying, punishing in fast. Spicy. Gets better with some time but a bit tough. Not a huge fan of what seems to be a very forced wine.

  • 2003 Feudi di San Gregorio Irpinia Serpico 89 Points

    A1 steak sauce on the nose but in an appealing and spicy way. Earthy on the palate with a ripe tomato note. Some Brett. It may not sound appealing, but it was more immediately pleasurable than the 2001.

  • 2000 Arnaldo-Caprai Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni 91 Points

    Balsamic and ash on the nose. Incredibly dark and concentrated. Stern. Wow. I mean WOW! This is amazingly black and dense stuff that at age 10 seems utterly unevolved. I guess the 25 Anni on the label is an indication of how long you need to age this. I am rating it well for sheer impressiveness, but there is much more masochism than pleasure at this pont.
