Introduction
To me, nothing announces summer as a new batch of rosés. Paul Burns brought a group of us together at the Wine Cellar Club in Irvine to celebrate summer and taste some new releases (with one exception). Lots of variable stuff out there, but my favorites of the tasting ended up coming from France -- a surprising tie between the elegant and fresh Chidaine and the complex and rich Tempier, both terrific examples of the pink juice.
NV Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé 89 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Fresh notes of strawberries, grapefruit peels, and lemon. Zesty on the palate with a tart citrus-laden finish. 89-90 points.

2009 Frédéric Magnien Bourgogne Rosé 88 Points

Pretty notes of roses, red cherries, strawberries, and unripe nectarines. Elegant and refreshing. 88-89 points.

2009 François Chidaine Val de Loire Grolleau Pinot Noir Rosé 90 Points
France, Loire Valley, Val de Loire
This has just about everything I look for in a rosé. Delicate notes of watermelon, unripe strawberries, tart nectarines, and chalk. Perhaps a bit hallow on the midpalate but fresh and energetic on the finish. This wine just screams summer. Tied for WOTN.

2009 Château du Donjon Minervois Rosé 85 Points

Woodsy notes of wild strawberries and garrigue that turn to watermelon Jolly Ranchers with air. Rich on the palate with hints of charcuterie on the finish. 85-86 points.

2009 Clos Pepe Estate Rosé of Pinot Noir 87 Points

The color of this wine is crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if it could glow in the dark. Tangy notes of unripe strawberries, cranberries, young nectarines, and garrigue. The finish is not as polished as I would like, but this is a unique rosé that must be tasted.

Simple notes of roses and cologne. Compact and heavy on the palate. Not exactly what I look for in a rosé.

Exotic notes of raspberry jam watermelon, and oyster shells. Heavy and a bit sweet on the palate.

2009 Domaine Tempier Bandol Rosé 90 Points
France, Provence, Bandol
Unique and complex notes of rosemary, fresh cut grass, unripe strawberries, and oyster shells. Bursting with fruit on the palate, rich but fresh. An outstanding rosé. Tied for WOTN.

2008 Château de Peyrassol Côtes de Provence Rosé 86 Points

The sole 2008 of the tasting. Notes of unripe apricots, chalk, and beeswax. Nice but could use a bit more acidity.
