Introduction

To celebrate Bob's birthday, an awesome group of people got together in Van Ness and sipped some good Champagne and ate some really good sushi and cheeses. It wasn't too hot, but warm enough for the wines to taste really refreshing. It was really interesting to taste the wines with the different sushi rolls, as some pairings were really great, where as others clashed a bit. Overall, the wines and food were great.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • NV Domaine des Baumard Crémant de Loire Carte Turquoise 75 Points

France, Loire Valley, Crémant de Loire

this is the color of a light onion, almost no bead that disappears. nose is light with some floral and citrus, but the palate is thin and weak. low acid, and light fruit, like sprite with a bit of lemon in it.

medium bead. the nose is a bit toasty and chalky. on the palate, this is pretty zesty. but it also had some good golden apple and pear fruit.

  • NV Lamiable Champagne Grand Cru Brut 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

golden colored with a fine mousse. toasty aromas with almond paste or toasted nuts. thick on the palate, but the acidity balances it out. i got lots of lemon peel and minerals. good stuff and it went well with some of the bolder-flavored sushi.

  • NV Gruet Winery Brut Rosé 87 Points

  • NV Moutard Père et Fils Champagne Prestige Rosé 86 Points

    France, Champagne

i got orange peel and cheese on the nose, which i found really attractive. cherries on the palate, but the wine tastes a bit fat, boring, lacking acid and complexity. like the girl who you would find vaguely attractive if she had any sort of personality.

  • NV L. Aubry Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé 90 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

a bit stinky on the nose, but that blew off, and it started smelling like lemons and ruby red grapefruit. full bodied and toasty, yeasty with lots of minerals and chalk. minerals on the finish.

  • NV Nicolas Maillart Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 86 Points

bit of hairspray on the nose, some cherries, and some green aromas, like corn stalks. spicy acid. some cherry flavors, there's this underlying greeness, like a bit of unripe fruit.

  • NV Eric Rodez Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

a bit of a funky nose, with leaves and dried fruit. earthy on the palate, and i get a very distinct flavor of caramel. it tastes a bit of burned marsmallows on some strawberries. it tastes almost a bit tannic. a very unique wine, that intrigues me, but one that i think a lot of people wouldn't like.

  • 2005 Domaine des Baumard Coteaux du Layon Clos de Sainte Catherine 93 Points

France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Coteaux du Layon

golden colored. nose is explosive, even when it's chilled. lots of honey, nuts and golden apricot. also a bit of gasoline. really fat and oily on the palate. tons of honey and creme brulee and apricot jam. the richness is so sexy with this wine. there's also some minerals and seashells. if it had just a bit more acid, i would be totally nuts about this wine. as it is, i'm just in love with it, not obsessed with it.
