Introduction

Pat, Matt, Vytauras and I got together for a night of Pinot Noir. We drank 4 blinded: #1 - the 2006 Dino Torti Oltrepo Pavese Pinot Nero; #2 -2007 Foley Sant Rita Hills Pinot Noir Rancho Santa Rosa; #3 - Louis Latour Pinot Noir Bourgogne; #4 - 2008 Patricia Green Estate Ribbon Ridge Pinot Noir. After that we tried a 2007 River's Edge Pinot Noir and a Pinot Nero Bianco from the same producer as the above Pinot Nero. The night ended with a Solera 1927 Alvear Pedro Ximenez Sherry.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2006 Dino Torti Pinot Nero Oltrepò Pavese 85 Points

    Italy, Lombardia, Oltrepò Pavese

Translucent garnet color. Some charcoal on the nose that faded with time in the glass, giving way to more red fruit and a hint of pepper. Bright acidity on a light body without a lot of complexity. All agreed this was a good food wine.

  • 2008 Louis Latour Pinot Noir Bourgogne 79 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Lightest of 4 wines we drank in a blind tasting. Green nose with lemongrass, under-ripe fruit and a little pepper on the palate. The acidity that was there wasn't in balance with the fruit, like biting into a greenish white strawberry. Did not evolve over the night. Only wine that was disliked of the 4 we had, but was the cheapest offering.

  • 2008 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Estate Ribbon Ridge 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

Garnet color. Nose was expressive but not powerful, with rose, awesome Pinot Noir funk and cherry predominant. Some forest floor joined those flavors on the palate with mild spice. Med-long finish .Number 1 or 2 (out of 4) on everyone's list on the blind tasting, and we all agreed was the most "typical" pinot.

  • 2007 River's Edge Pinot Noir Umpqua 88 Points

USA, Oregon, Southern Oregon, Umpqua Valley

Very good QPR. Nose of baking spices and red fruit with a little wet leaves added in on the palate. The acidity was a little less, it was just a little less balanced and its finish was a little shorter than the next level up in this grape, but it outclassed some wines tasted on the same night in the same price range. Very enjoyable.

  • NV Alvear Pedro Ximénez Montilla-Moriles Solera 1927 93 Points

    Spain, Andalucía, Montilla-Moriles

Dark motor oil in consistency and color. I was surprised to find the bottle was clear glass after I poured it. The nose had date and fig. The palate had some marmelade to add acidity to the flavors present on the nose. The finish went on for 3 - 5 minutes

Closing

In the end, the night belonged to the US of A with #2, #4, #3, and #1 coming in that order, but the bottles averaged more than twice the cost of the European contingency. The Sherry to end the evening was great and WOTN per some, but not a good idea.
