Introduction

We started with a lovely Champagne I forgot to write down - 92 - very crisp, delicious acidity, not bready but lemony.

  • 2003 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

    Solid wine, if a bit past its peak. There's a bit of oxidation going on. But there's also balanced oak, a nutty and creamy mouthfeel, and enough acidity to keep it honest.

  • 2001 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Les Cousins 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

    Very underrated on here - my group was in consensus that this was a phenomenal Pinot. The mouthfeel is where this stands out, with great glycerin but no overripe sweetness. There's oak here to be sure, but it's well-integrated by this point. Great balance, perfect age.

  • 2003 Steltzner Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District 90 Points

    Solid Cab - nice mouthfeel, good ripeness level, with a definite delicious factor that makes up for it not being crazy complex. Opens up nicely.

    Very nice. Definitely ripe and extracted, but age has given this time to tame. So much dark, tarry goodness, with great balance and ample structure.

  • 2006 Sanguis Novillero 95 Points

    Sanguis does it again. On the nose, this is odd - almost a grape Kool Aid (like the Owen Roe Chapel Block from last month). But on the palate, whoa. This thing explodes and punches you in the face from every direction. Elegance was not invited to the party here, there's big structure framing an intense dark fruitiness, chocolate, graphite, and pretty much anything else you can imagine. We probably had no business drinking it at this stage - once the youthful exuberance fades and the wine gets a little more harmony, this will be a knockout.

  • 1983 Beringer Vineyards Nightingale 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

    I was unsure about this one, but I was really impressed. This drank like a Tokaji in training, with beautiful tobacco action, and honeyed sweetness balanced with great acidity. Not a trace of overalcoholic Sauternes stuff going on, and the age was perfect. Delicious juice.
