Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2007 Domaine Notre Dame des Pallières Gigondas Les Mourres

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Spicy, some licorice, but also an offputting rubbery component. Full entry, then thins out. Not much breadth, weird tarry element, hot finish. Pretty much a disaster.

  • 2007 Domaine du Grand Montmirail Gigondas Les Deux Juliettes Sélection des Vieilles Vignes

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Funk, mint, and florality. Loose knit wine with medium body, red fruit, and a strongly herbal finish. This lacks mid-palate texture and a sense of length, but it does have a good variety of Rhone flavors.

  • 2006 Domaine les Pallières Gigondas

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

The lightest color of the whole bunch. Not wholly clean aromas with black licorice. Pleasingly harmonious mouth feel, excellent fruit underneath. Round with a degree of lushness but nicely restrained at the same time. Gently tannic finish, good length and excellent natural sweetness of fruit. Nice intensity for its relatively lighter weight. A winner and one of my favorites in this line up.

  • 2006 Domaine La Bouïssiere Gigondas

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Candied red fruit, quite perfumed already. Medium to lighter weight. Gentle wine without a great deal of tannic or acid structure. Some oak is obvious but not intrusive. Prototypical mixture of red fruit and green Provencale herbs, lovely lingering finish. I liked this '06 also even though personally, I could do without the wood.

  • 2005 Domaine les Pallières Gigondas

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Lots of funky aromatics with background menthol. Light, savory, and much more about tobacco, black licorice, and herbs than fruit. It comes across as somewhat thin and stripped. Not bad, but today the '06 was much better.

  • 2007 Domaine les Pallières Gigondas Les Racines Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Inky colored, anise, but subtly corked, which wiped out the fruit.

  • 2007 Domaine les Pallières Gigondas Les Racines

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Redo. This is more like it! Boysenberry fruit and some anise. Thinner than the color and the initial rich entry suggested. Fairly simple and straightforward flavors, but one point in its favor is that the finish does not have the heat of its brother bottling.

  • 2007 Domaine les Pallières Gigondas Terrasse du Diable

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Also very deep purple color. Ripe but somber nose. Beautiful volume, texture, and melange of red/black fruit. The sweetness is held in check here, but the finish is noticeably more alcoholic than the Racines.

  • 2007 Domaine La Bouïssiere Gigondas

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Lacy, high toned aromatics that are infused with garrigue. Lush but not heavy with an amazing chocolate/coffee flavor. Round tannins and could use a touch more acidity for focus and freshness. As it sits out, the wood becomes more evident and probably accounts for that chocolate note which is not particularly southern Rhone. Flashy wine that is very attractive at first but loses some of its interest with subsequent tastes.
