  • 2005 Domaine Huet Vouvray Cuvée Huet Brut

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

    Pale, slightly effervescent but not enthusiastically so. Light, dry, and mineral with subtle orange blossom tones. This is not as weighty as other recent vintages, but it has great intensity.

  • 2002 André-Michel Brégeon Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie Reserve

    France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine

    Darker than your usual Muscadet. Citrus nose. Wow, the initial impression is like sucking on white grapefruit rind, but then there are additional layers of richness, excellent persistence, and a powdery, rocky finish. Remarkable wine, pretty head turning for Muscadet.

  • 2008 Georges Roblin et Fils Sancerre Château de Maimbray

    France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    As on other occasions, pungent, grassy, full of green apple. Light, lean, green prototypical Sancerre. A joy to drink.

  • 2005 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Clos du Bourg

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

    Medium yellow color. Honey and pear. Positives-delicious fruit in an off dry style and a nice dose of soil on the finish. Negatives-acid is too low and the focus is just not there. Enjoyable at present, but this will not take its place in the temple of great Huets.

Flight 2 - Reds (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine de la Chanteleuserie Bourgueil Cuvée Beauvais

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Bourgueil

    Medium color. Balanced bright raspberry and graphite on the nose. Light to medium weight. The fruit is overtaken by the pencil shavings and tannins in the mouth, but this is still good basis Cabernet Franc.

  • 2007 Charles Joguet Chinon Clos du Chêne Vert

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

    Medium depth. Very forward, indeed assertively green aromatics. Medium to light weight. There is some sweetness to the fruit and reasonable balance, but this wine really leaves one wanting for more intensity and palate presence. Underripe tannins. Quite disappointing for such an expensive Chinon.

  • 2007 Charles Joguet Chinon Les Varennes du Grand Clos

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

    Medium color. Peppery but not nearly as assertively green as the Chene Vert. Completely different feel too-this is harmoniously round with medium weight and excellent balance of black fruit and riper tannins. Strong, well hidden acidity. Absolutely lovely, and my favorite of the 3 Joguets by a wide margin. If it happens to be the least pricy of these wines, so much the better.

  • 2007 Charles Joguet Chinon Clos de la Dioterie

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

    Similar color. Already pleasingly fragrant. However, it is very backward with the most serious structure and most teeth clinging tannins of the Joguet wines shown today. It clearly needs aging, but I would not bet on it given its paucity of apparent fruit.
