Introduction

My wife and I joined some friends to see the Cleveland Orchestra perform Brahms last night. Beforehand, we had a nice picnic. I brought the wines. The group likes wine but are certainly not geeks.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine Luneau-Papin Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie Vieilles Vignes Clos des Allées 91 Points

France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine sur lie

Drank before an outdoor concert of the Cleveland Orchestra with non-geeks. What a great white wine and great value. Crushed shells and sea air on the nose. Minerality galore. Smooth and great with food. Interesting and delicious. Great finish. Lovely wine.

  • 2006 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese 89 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Really nice on a hot evening with some spicy food. My non-geek friend almost consumed the entire bottle and she rarely drinks much! The nose is very "fruity", some pineapple notes. Slightly viscous and sweet but falls short of being cloying. Barely a hint of petrol. Nice finish.

  • 2005 Sineann Cabernet Franc Champoux Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills

This is just starting to get to a good place. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is very nice with cassis, cranberries, a hint of tobacco and lacking anything under ripe or green. On the palate, it is starting to unwind with a very nice complexity. Cassis and warm layered earth seemingly intertwined in a very interesting wine. I suspect it will be better on Day 2. Glass enclosure.
