Introduction

This was a rare chance to taste across 4 different vineyards in Meursault, and to compare very rare wines from Roulot, Lafon and Coche-Dury from the 2004 vintage. The Lafon wines were a big disappointment for me, but the others showed very well.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2004 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Light straw color. Lime, grapefruits appear on a light nose showing some spicy notes, very Chablis-like. Taut, tight and acidic palate. Pungent almost bitter flavors that are pronounced but not rich/fat. Very lean and astringent. Long juicy finish showing more acid and edge. Very nice and should be a long lived wine.

  • 2004 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    Deep yellow color, almost golden. Rich lemon butter nose, with some floral notes. Spicy, nutty palate with good tartness and then smooth. Long finish. I’d be worried about premox on this wine, as it appears more advanced than I would expect. Drink up.

  • 2004 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    First pour of the day for this one. Yellow tinged straw color. Beautiful ,sexy, spicy subtle oak nose, with some dusty grapefruit notes. Medium palate, tart, young, edgy and nervous with fine tannins. Lean and cut in a good way. Medium finish, with lots of recurring tartness and some acid. Needs time to unwind but should be spectacular.

  • 2004 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    Deep golden yellow color. Butterscotch and cognac nose. Dead, lifeless palate, showing no energy. Short finish. Premoxed/Dead/Shot/Tragic!

  • 2004 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    First pour of the day for this one. Crystal yellow color. Marzipan, subtle dusty lemons, grapefruit nose. Tart, lemony, more prominent on the front of the palate (tip of the tongue), edgy, mineral, like sucking on lemon rocks. Medium finish, lots of acid, juicy and edgy. A long runner that will be spectacular when the acid calms down. Outstanding.

  • 2004 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    First pour of the day for this one. Yellow (but no gold hints) color. Drop dead gorgeous nose of matchstick, brioche, flint, pear and white flowers. Oh my is this sexy, one of the best noses on any wine anywhere. Tart palate, still very young and un-evolved, displaying minerals and spice delivered in a rather intense package with fine but quite firm tannins and energy. Liquid rocks. Long finish with a really nice flavor recurrence and juicy intensity. Killer.
