2007 DuMOL Chardonnay Isobel 94 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Such a classy wine. Rich nose studded with plenty of roasted almond, coconut, vanilla, and grilled pear. The palate is nearly seamless. Nicely balanced yellow apple, fresh cream, silky texture with a burst of acidity throughout. As it warms, more tropics come forward.

2005 Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay Ethos Reserve 90 Points

Sort of a surprise to see this one in the lineup given the rest of the wines. Even so, this showed beautifully. In a fully mature stage right now, this was quite richer than the DuMOL Isobel tried prior. More toasted bread, more almonds, clotted cream, and yellow apple. The acid is a touch behind the intensity and richness of the palate, but overall nicely balanced.

1979 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 92 Points

When I saw this one pulled, I thought I have tasted in past, and I have. This was quite shy at first. Firm in acidity and tannin, the midpalate didn't flesh out for 20 minutes or so in glass. After a while I was surprised with a burst of black fruits, cherry and cassis. The acidity softened a bit and tannins rounded out. Lots of autumnal aromas, leaves, potpourri, mushrooms. It was fun to watch this blossom in the glass over 30 minutes at least.

1934 Château Margaux 92 Points

Hans's birth year. Well, this showed great considering its age and all. Very powerful aromatics right off the bat. Sour cherry, minerals, slight gamey funk. Herbal streak as well, rosemary and maybe a touch floral with lavender. The palate was full with leather and tobacco up front, surprisingly fresh cherry and cranberry on the midpalate. The acidity is still lively and fresh. Actually, after 10 minutes or so in glass, this is freshening up and waking up. The tertiary qualities are balancing with a fresh fruit appeal. Dusty tannin on the backpalate and a very spicy (baking spices) finish. 92+

1989 Château Gruaud Larose 87 Points

I am concerned with where this one is headed. Very tight and closed with tannins that aren't shy at the least. Shows decent overall balance in structure, just lacking a bit of fruit. After a bit, some black fig, currant show through, but in a dried out style. Nice acid, plenty of spice and a bit of burnt toast. While not drinking as good as it could, it might not get any better?

2006 Siduri Pinot Noir Truett Nolan 92 Points

Wow, after digging up some old Bordeaux, what a palate shock to get some new world PN. Had in the past and thought it was delicious. A little full bodied PN than I enjoy, however can't take away the fact that it is delicious. Lots of black cherry and berries, spicy midpalate, and soft finish. As rich as a PN this is, shows an elegance that all PN should have.

1980 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 90 Points

For some reason I thought I was drinking a '90, and it tasted like I was. Still showing rather youthful fruits, not tired by any means. The structure is still immense with plenty of tannic backbone and acidity. Surprisingly fresh black currants, cherry, tobacco, spices, and the famous eucalypt. Nice little ringer to throw in the mix.

1997 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 92 Points

3rd or 4th time trying this and while it isn't necessarily getting any better, this one showed a little fresher. Still plenty of secondary herbal, forest floor things going on, but with a burst of cranberry and raspberry. Nice little mushroom element, baking spices, and high acidity.

1996 Hospices de Beaune Clos de la Roche Cuvée Georges Kritter Méo-Camuzet Butte Creek Selection 94 Points

From 1.5L. Again commenting on the bottle variation for some reason. This one showed awesome!! Fruit is still rich and shining. Fresh berry bushes, blueberries, red currants. Asian spices, coriander, etc. Medium plus bodied with a great elegant midpalate. Finishes with great acidity and still has a bit of tannic structure. Earthy components show every now and again. Herbs, wild mushroom, mud. Good stuff. Hopefully there is a bottle or two left that will show like this one.

Holy sh*t this is some good juice. Glad I ended with this one otherwise we could have stopped drinking a long time ago. Talk about exotic. While not fully mature, this was showing beautifully. Creamy blueberry, cassis, black plum. Asian spice, maybe some spices that I don't even know about. Toasted bread, not burnt, but close. Richly extracted still, great acidity, and still showing dusty tannic structure. Finish lasts forever. Some coffee beans and dark leather. WOW
