Introduction

The goal here was simply to drink good Rieslings. We happen to be longer in quality German Rieslings than others. So the title of the event should be no slight to quality Austrian or Alsatian Rieslings (for example). Some of the Germans we had tonight were absolutely sublime. After the experience at this tasting, I will definitely have to keep my eye on Nahe wines. The Mosels seem to get most of the attention, but I found myself gravitating to the Nahe wines. Awesome tasting. Donnhoffs were the winners.

Flight 1 - Sparkling Starter (1 Note)

  • 2006 Ratzenberger Bacharacher Riesling Sekt Brut 87 Points

    Germany, Mittelrhein

    A light and refreshing sparkling Riesling. A bit candied on the nose gives way to a nice mineral and floral palate. Pear and sour fruit on the mid-palate. Bubbles are refined and in the background.

    Secondary. Honey, quince and toffee on the nose. Green apple but a touch flabby on the mid-palate. Good finish.

    Excellent value. Nice sweetness. Concentrated. Sweet baked apple, brown sugar. But the acidity was there throughout. The finish is great. Deceiving at first, but this really comes into its own after a few minutes.

  • 2005 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling Spätlese 94 Points

    Germany, Nahe

    The Spatlese line-up just got better and better. The wines were all too young but oh so good. Terrific concentration. Honeyed sweetness with steely minerals. The acidity is stupendous. As with many of the wines on this night, the finish never quite goes away until you take another sip.

  • 2007 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese 97 Points

    One of my wines of the night. This is magnificent. Amazing concentration and development in the glass. Melon, exotic honey, apple, pear, tropical fruits. There is endless development of juicy fruit with amazing underlying acidity. You never want the sensations on the palate to end until you hit the finish, which is miles long and pleasing the entire way. This continues to crescendo. Remarkable wine.

  • 1999 Ratzenberger Bacharacher Wolfshöhle Riesling Spätlese 87 Points

    Too bad for this. It came after 3 dynamite wines. This is a qualitative choice and has its place, but just was overwhelmed by the wines that came before. Drier than previous wines. More minerals. Not as concentrated with honeyed fruit. Peach iced tea, lemon. Nice crispness.
