Another solid event for our core group of John G, Kevin B, John R, Gary A, and me. As a bonus we had Brian (John G's brother) in attendance. Always a fun time this event had a number of solid wines and not a bad one in the bunch (of course that is by design). A typical thanks to John R for venue prep and hosting at Edina CC, and an extra thanks to Kevin B for the starter Rose and bonus red at the end. Equally an extra thanks to John G for the after dinner/tasting Aussie sticky.
2007 Domaine de la Janasse Côtes du Rhône Rosé 88 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Nose: Strawberries and some mineral. Palate: Strawberries show in abundance with decent balance. A little higher acid levels would have improved this wine, but overall nice.

2003 Château Lascombes 91 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Nose: Gravelly, dusty with some typical Lascombes funk which later blew off with air. Palate: Somewhat bright with good acid levels. Darker fruited which became more evident as the night went on. Very nice. Always liked Lascombes.

2004 Château Haut-Bailly 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Nose: Mint and cedar with some mineral. Palate: Fresh and bright red fruits. Fairly linear at first but after greater glass aeration this really rounded out and the red fruits were deeper and more defined.

France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
Nose: Blackberries, earth and smoked meat. Palate: Blackberries and solid tannins. Opened up well over the course of the evening. Good but not great.

2003 Château Saint-Pierre 91 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
John R decanted this for 4 1/2 hours. Nose: Scorched earth and tar. Later pencil lead shows up big time with some spice. Palate: Lush and soft with red and some dark fruits. Medium length finish. Very nice effort.

2003 Château Kirwan 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Kevin decanted this for 2 1/2 hours. Nose: Dust and mineral with characteristic violets, spice, and hints of licorice. Palate: Spice and some faint bacon fat flavors under the wonderfully balanced black fruits. The bacon hints were not showing after more air time. Medium to long finish. Very solid effort and my WOTN.

2003 Château Pontet-Canet 91 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Nose: Ripe red fruits and a bit of green notes that faded somewhat with air but were still present. Palate: Shows ripe red fruits and some mineral. Good tannins and acidity, and a solid medium to long finish. The greeness of the nose was not present on palate. It would be interesting to try this again as the green quality of the nose kept this from being 92-93+ points for me.

Bonus wine from Kevin. Nose: Red fruited with cassis and underlying earth. Palate: The red fruits show with some subtle spice. Very soft and accessible. Really pleasant and a good QPR play.

Bonus finisher wine from John G. Nose: Carmelized nuts and apricot hints. Palate: Rich and thick but not too weighty. Long finish. I always like these Yalumba fortified stickies.
