Introduction

The first meeting of the season. Laura brought the wines, I tasted double blind.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Avondale Jonty's Ducks Pekin Red 78 Points

    South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl

    Decanted for an hour, tasted double blind. This was a rather pale red with a somewhat nondescript nose of red berries like lingonberry. The palate had some tannins, but was rather watery and lingonberryish. I was thinking some kind of Pinot Noir, don't know how they've managed to make a Syrah-Cabernet blend taste this bland. 50+3+8+12+5=78

  • 2007 Camilleri Wines Syrah GWL 81 Points

    Malta, DOK Gozo

    Decanted for an hour, tasted double blind. A very pale red with a rather interesting nose of red berries, some moccha/meat and boiled cabbage. The palate has cranberry and a meaty aspect to it, but not really any tannins. I had no idea what this was and it was fun when it was revealed to be a Maltese wine. Fun! 50+3+9+12+7=81

Closing

The Maltese wine was interesting, the South African wine did not turn me on at all.
