Potomac Point Winery, Stafford, VA
Tasted Monday, September 6, 2010 by jsimmons with 665 views
Traveled to winery on Labor Day 2010 with Jess, Amber, and Dave. Toured winemaking operation (tasted partially fermented Viognier), barrel room, and vineyards. Tasting in subterranean warehouse area and led by winery owner, followed by lunch at on-site cafe. Splendid afternoon.

Crisp, clean, a little vegetal on the finish.

2008 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Chardonnay Richland Reserve Turk Mountain
USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Albemarle County
Crisp like the non-Reserve Chardonnay, but whoa, what a butter bomb - like drinking melted butter, basically. A little green on the nose and sort of salty on the finish. Not my style at all, but Dave and Jess really liked it.

2008 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Viognier Richland Reserve 85 Points

Nice and crisp, with lots of tropical fruit - a surprising sweetness, even though the wine is completely dry. Good, thick body.

A good, tropical and melon nose, but lazy on the palate - there's plenty of potential, but it just feels like it's not even trying to impress. Some acidity in the background.

Wonderful bouquet, but hardly anything forward on the palate, with a nondescript sweet finish.

2009 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Abbinato 88 Points

Better than some Italian Sangios I've had. Lots of good red fruit, stewed or pickled red pepper, spicy finish.

2008 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Merlot 83 Points
USA, Virginia, Northern Virginia
A very Virginia-style red, reminiscent of a Norton. Very dark, and the 5% Cab Franc comes through very, very clear on the nose and palate. Peppery finish.

2008 Potomac Point Vineyard & Winery Cabernet Franc 84 Points
USA, Virginia, Central Virginia
Strawberry and heat on the nose, good dark fruit forward, vegetal midpalate with lots of acidity behind it, and tons of black, black pepper on the finish. There's pretty good tannin structure here, and I bet it will be more interesting in a year or two.

Very tannic, a little loose forward but powerful on the finish. Definitely needs some more time.

Wow! Honey, apple, a little orange. Sweet, but not overpowering or cloying at all. Light-bodied, but with definite presence. Really terrific.

Lots of chocolate, dark cherries on the nose and palate. Well-made, but very thin compared to an actual Port.
